“Normally, Americans observe Memorial Day by remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our great nation. But these are not normal times. Over the last several months, we have seen a virus decimate families and communities. Nationally, we’re approaching 100,000 deaths in our fight against COVID-19. We will soon have lost twice as many people to this virus as we did in the war in Viet Nam.
“We’ve learned of thousands of front-line medical professionals who have been infected with COVID-19 and that too many of them have died. Take this day to remember those we’ve lost in past conflicts, but also remember those we’ve lost during this current crisis. Their number will continue to rise for days to come. To honor those we’ve lost and those who strive to protect us, we ask everyone to maintain safe social distance, wear a mask, and take all precautions to stop the spread of this virus.”
