“The month of August ended as it began: with a shooting rampage and a significant death toll,” as The New York Times is reporting.
“Five people were killed near Odessa, Tex., on Saturday as a gunman started shooting indiscriminately at cars, bringing the number of victims of mass killings by firearms to 51 for the month.
“The term mass killings is defined by the Justice Department as three or more killings in a single episode, excluding the death of a gunman. There is no legal definition for the term mass shooting, despite its frequent use by gun control groups and the news media.
“This month’s loss of life was most acute in Texas, where four of the eight deadliest shootings occurred, including an Aug. 3 massacre at a Walmart in El Paso that killed 22 people.
“The spate of gun violence has left the country on edge and catalyzed a more intense debate over gun control.”

Take I-80 a couple thousand miles east to I-88, then turns into I-290 and the Eisenhower Expressway, (right past where I grew up) exit off at Cicero Ave, park and start walking north, you will find plenty of outrage.

Hey Russ….Chicago is constantly brought up after mass shootings with the angle that liberals don’t really care. Off course we care and the solutions for Chicago are the same for the mass shootings: universal background checks, red flag laws, stop selling military level assault weapons, and no large magazines. These are the measures opposed by the NRA and the 2nd Amendment advocates. If they cared about Chicago shootings they would support these common sense measures.

Add those seven individuals, randomly slaughtered Saturday by a shooter in the West Texas cities of Midland and Odessa, to the toll of those lost to America’s gun insanity. And then pose this question:
What if there was a mass shooting in the United States not once or twice or four or six times monthly, but every single day, a big one, the kind that electrifies social media and squats for days on Page 1 — would that be enough to move Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell from his insistent inertia on gun safety? Would any volume of bloodshed convince the Kentucky Republican that Congress faces a moral imperative to act? Thirty-eight people were slain in three such shootings in August — in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, as well as West Texas — and still Senate Republicans and President Trump refuse to act.
The list below, far from comprehensive, is tragic, in part, because it is so far from inevitable. No, no single law would end gun violence. But there are reasonable, obvious measures that would help.
For example: Ban the sale of military-grade assault weapons. Unneeded by civilians, they are a blight on the nation, their ready availability a national disgrace. Eliminating them would slow the growth of this list. It would save lives.
