“And Then There Were None” — English writer Agatha Christie
So it goes on our vocal, local right-wing blogs. The lastest “CA escapee,” as Rebane’s Ruminations reports is Rich Ulery, who served as a longtime chairman of the Nevada County Republican Central Committee.
For Rich, “greener pastures” is Pima County, Ariz., which Rich boasts “has negligible unfunded pension liabilities. I suspect Nevada County is still hovering close to $200 million.” (In fact, this is a problem in Arizona too).
But it gets better. In the comment section, I noted the cost of running an air conditioner 24/7. After making another “fat” joke, “Gregory” wrote: “Swamp coolers are very effective in AZ,” adding “I’ve relatives in Arizona, and the family house of many years was in a development in the middle of Tucson that didn’t have paved roads, just the local sand.
“Kept it much cooler in the heat of the day and it cooled off nicely after the sun went down.”
In fact, “Mr. Science,” even Arizonans are fed up with swamp coolers. The “sometimes noisy, always drippy” swamp coolers “were common in neighborhoods across the region starting in the 1940s, but have been in sharp decline since the late ’80s, as the Arizona Republic observes.
And then there’s living in a neighborhood without paved roads, just local sand. This doesn’t sould like a “dream retirement lifestyle” to me, but to each his own.
You can’t make up the stuff that appears in our local right-wing blogs, justifying a rigid political ideology. Of course, our politics are “purple” now and getting bluer, and that’s what eats at this shrinking demographic.
More escapees from California to come at Rebane’s Rants! One of them obviously feels right at home in Idaho: “Keep trying to take away Constitutional rights and you might find out why we have the 2nd A.”
And another warns us: “California will become the land of old hippies and failed socialism as the kids head for greener pastures.” And “Give it this census or the next and California will be losing population and representation in Congress.” ROFLOL!
Is this what is meant by “failed socialism”? https://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-fortune-500-california-20170607-story.html Or this? https://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-california-economy-gdp-20180504-story.html Adios!
Imagine boasting about your supposedly glorious Spanish holiday with a new/old family and friends but being wound up because of commentary on Jeff Pelline’s blog 5,600 miles away!
“Jeff Pelline. Again with no valid arguments but only empty rhetoric. I do appreciate your tenacity and advocacy for your failing homeland. We’ll eat a few pintxos for you tonight. 😂Posted by: Barry Pruett | 20 June 2019 at 06:46 AM” (That’s supposed to “happy hour,” Spanish time).
That movie ought to be retitled: Harvey, Illinois, native discovers Basque Country! Have another glass of Txakoli on me. ROFLOL.
You can’t make this stuff up! Over at Rebane Rants, Gregory continues to live in the early 20th century (ruminating about an era when swamp fans were king in Pima County, Ariz., and Margaret Sanger founded the birth control movement) while Pruett (the gymnastics-school owner turned Valpo-grad small-town lawyer turned clerk-recorder candidate turned “fill in the blank” …) now promises he’s getting a “History PhD. (and) We are projecting out of the USA by 2024.” Hurry up, will you? LOL. Now what color is your parachute? (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/What_Color_is_Your_Parachute%3F) ROFLOL!
It seems that calling someone is an “old hippie” is a bad thing. I’m happy being one.
I find that people who use “old hippie” are those just a few years too old to have enjoyed the benefits of that era, and they’ve never gotten over that.
Well said!
I couldn’t agree more Bruce. I’ve met younger people who also appeared resentful.
I remember the migration of the 70’s that headed to AZ. It seems that people were moving there for the dry climate. Since then swimming pools and golf courses were built thus raising the humidity.
Gregory (AKA “Mr. Science” and “Mr. Math”) doesn’t seem to understand that swamp coolers also are called “swamp fans” and that “early 20th century” refers to 1940 (when swamp fans were king in Pima County, Ariz.) and also the period when Margaret Sanger founded birth control.

Perhaps his son can help him with his “math issue” and “cultural ignorance.” LOL.
It’s prime time in Spain for dinner and night life, where Pruett is boasting about a glorious vacation. Instead, he is spending his time grinding axes on George Rebane’s blog. Let’s hope Mrs. Pruett closes his computer and takes him out dancing. The poor man is wound up tighter than a drum. ROFLOL.
California hits back:

Why does George Rebane’s blog continue to be pollinated with “CA escapees” (AKA people who are no longer locals)? He is running out of like-minded local compadres. George already has fallen below the minimum for a good poker game.
