UC Berkeley ranked world’s No. 1 public, fourth-best overall by US News

“UC Berkeley retains the title of the world’s No.1 public, and fourth-best university overall, in U.S. News & World Report’s latest global rankings,” according to the news magazine.

“As they did last year, Harvard, MIT and Stanford took the top three spots, with the UK’s University of Oxford right behind Berkeley to round out the top five.

“The California Institute of Technology held on to sixth place, with the University of Cambridge, Columbia, Princeton and the University of Washington in Seattle finishing out the top 10. Yale and Johns Hopkins dropped from the previous year to 11th and 12th.

“As for the top five public universities, UC Berkeley ranked first globally, followed by the University of Washington, UCLA, UCSF and UC San Diego.

“The U.S. News & World Report’s fifth annual Best Global University Rankings, made public today, focus on the publication of academic research and on reputation. This year, 1,250 universities in 75 countries were evaluated.”

  1. Our local yokel Greg Goodknight’s alma mater (AKA an EE degree from Loyola Marymount University) is not mentioned anywhere near the top of this list, but I found a link here that honor’s Greg’s intellectual achievements. You have to scroll down to the very bottom of the page. It reads: “Greg Goodknight
    Sacramento, California Area
Independent software engineer at my place” You go, Greg!
    https://alumnius.net/loyola_marymount_uni-7876-82

    1. What a hoot! Goodknight comes onto Rebane’s blog at 11:35 p.m. to tell us “Mudd is #2 in the country for PhD’s among alumni.” But Greg is not a PhD. He’s a “independent software engineer at my place.”

  2. It’s endless! Pruett — our local newlywed — is up and at ’em on Todd’s blog at 6:30 a.m. on a Sunday morning, directing more personal attacks at me while I’m still in bed. I enjoyed watching college football games this weekend. I noticed that his alma mater, Valparaiso, has a team (in the “Pioneer” League). The team (“Valpo Crusaders”) has a 1-8 record, having just lost to the Marist Red Foxes. Go Valpo! Go Barry!

  3. I heard the end of the Cal-USC game on internet radio from Shanghai, and Cal won! Cal’s last victory against USC came on September 27, 2003 in triple overtime, blocking the Trojans from the BCS National Championship game, but not from the national title courtesy of the AP. I remember watching that game from Tahoe and celebrating. Now I’m celebrating again! Ha!

  4. Here’s partisanship for you! “Barry Pruett February 21, 2019 at 3:29 PM
https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/red-alert-politics/conservative-attacked-on-uc-berkeley-campus-for-protesting-jussie-smolletts-hate-crime-hoax …. #defunduc” defunduc? really? wow. meanwhile, here’s the university’s statement: ” . . . “At this point we have no information indicating that the perpetrators are affiliated with the university, and I join our police department in urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward so we can apprehend and bring the perpetrator to justice.”https://news.berkeley.edu/2019/02/21/a-message-from-campus-leaders-in-condemnation-of-violence/ Also, “Later in the day, the victim’s employer, the Leadership Institute, said he was not a student.”

  5. Barry Pruett apparently doesn’t know the difference between “Cal” (AKA UC Berkeley) and UC Davis. He writes on Todd’s blog:
“Cal is a nationwide punch line to a bad joke
    https://www.foxnews.com/us/california-professor-reprimanded-for-saying-police-need-to-be-killed-reports-say
The article is about a UC Davis professor, not a “Cal” professor. And of course, it’s Fox news slant.

Of course, consider Pruett’s academic pedigree:
    https://abovethelaw.com/2018/10/yet-another-troubled-law-school-to-close-its-doors/
Now that’s a “bad joke”? Or rather a sad one.

I wonder if Pruett will run a retraction, clearing up “Cal” vs. UC Davis, on Todd’s blog. He sure owes the Cal students and graduates a big apology. It’s nice to come home, but our community somehow seems to have attracted a disproportionate number of blockheads.
For the record, “UC Berkeley is the first University of California, so it was called California, or abbreviated Cal, founded in 1868.”

  6. Now Pruett is citing a source called “Hot Air.” That’s perfect for him. The Yvette Felarca case has nothing to do with “Cal.” That’s like claiming “Bad, bad Leroy Brown” is the gold standard in the neighborhood where Pruett grew up, the South Side of Chicago. ROFLOL. Let’s hope Pruett’s legal briefs are more persuasive that the bull he posts on Todd’s blog. Yikes!

  7. Todd and Barry are putting on another show this morning, with Barry finally pointing to links that mention “Cal” instead of UC Davis, and Todd resorting to four-letter words to make a point. No wonder his blog is labeled “Right Wing II” on NCVoices. I wonder if Pruett has ever heard of the free speech movement at “Cal” (hint: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_Speech_Movement) Meanwhile, other towns aren’t faring so well: https://www.npr.org/2017/09/06/545794591/once-a-blue-collar-powerhouse-a-chicago-suburb-now-faces-a-dim-future

      1. It sounds like the longtimers in this Midwestern town had trouble coping with change. That’s sad. By contrast, Berkeley is more accepting of diversity. “In the 1960s, the African American population of Harvey began to grow as white residents moved out of the community. Many long time white residents were not happy to see a heavy increase in the black population in the community and racial tensions ensued. It started out as maybe some racial slurs or dirty looks but by 1966 there were reports of vandalism, windows being broken out at local schools such as Thornton Township High School that was fully integrating black students much to the disapproval of many white residents. ” https://chicagoganghistory.com/suburb/harvey/

      2. Pruett is refusing to address the facts about “change” in his hometown (“fully integrating black students much to the disapproval of many white residents”), instead launching a false narrative (a tactic he used against Greg Diaz in the race he lost for clerk-recorder — in every precinct, no less. https://sierrafoothillsreport.com/2010/06/08/diaz-polishes-off-pruett-for-clerk-recorder-and-mcclintock-machine-suffers-setback/ AND learn about Greg here https://www.mynevadacounty.com/241/Meet-the-Clerk—Recorder ) Of course, consider Pruett’s legal pedigree: https://abovethelaw.com/2018/10/yet-another-troubled-law-school-to-close-its-doors/ It’s not exactly “Cal’s” Boalt Hall. ROFLOL. You go Barry!

      3. As I dig deeper, I’m finding that the actions in this town were truly disturbing. Here’s another citation: “Harvey was changing from white to black and many white residents were having a hard time accepting this change and felt they needed to cause trouble and intimidate black residents to encourage them to leave.” Wow. What were the whites thinking? https://chicagoganghistory.com/suburb/harvey/ I’m grateful you do not find this in places like Berkeley.

  8. Now Todd has resorted to discussing incontinence, while Barry is fondly recalling the days when he was on the board of Western Gateway Park, and it hosted gatherings of the Tea Party and SOJ. Of course, that all fizzled and now a bike park is being promoted instead. Imagine that! We donated to the bike park. http://www.gatewaybikepark.com/
