“UC Berkeley retains the title of the world’s No.1 public, and fourth-best university overall, in U.S. News & World Report’s latest global rankings,” according to the news magazine.
“As they did last year, Harvard, MIT and Stanford took the top three spots, with the UK’s University of Oxford right behind Berkeley to round out the top five.
“The California Institute of Technology held on to sixth place, with the University of Cambridge, Columbia, Princeton and the University of Washington in Seattle finishing out the top 10. Yale and Johns Hopkins dropped from the previous year to 11th and 12th.
“As for the top five public universities, UC Berkeley ranked first globally, followed by the University of Washington, UCLA, UCSF and UC San Diego.
“The U.S. News & World Report’s fifth annual Best Global University Rankings, made public today, focus on the publication of academic research and on reputation. This year, 1,250 universities in 75 countries were evaluated.”

Wow. My son received his BS from Berkeley and my daughter her MS and PHD.
Great parenting too. Good going!
A new program at Cal is featured in the Wall Street Journal this morning: https://www.wsj.com/articles/at-berkeley-its-big-data-on-campus-1541066401?mod=hp_lead_pos10
Our local yokel Greg Goodknight’s alma mater (AKA an EE degree from Loyola Marymount University) is not mentioned anywhere near the top of this list, but I found a link here that honor’s Greg’s intellectual achievements. You have to scroll down to the very bottom of the page. It reads: “Greg Goodknight
Sacramento, California Area
Independent software engineer at my place” You go, Greg!

What a hoot! Goodknight comes onto Rebane’s blog at 11:35 p.m. to tell us “Mudd is #2 in the country for PhD’s among alumni.” But Greg is not a PhD. He’s a “independent software engineer at my place.”
It’s endless! Pruett — our local newlywed — is up and at ’em on Todd’s blog at 6:30 a.m. on a Sunday morning, directing more personal attacks at me while I’m still in bed. I enjoyed watching college football games this weekend. I noticed that his alma mater, Valparaiso, has a team (in the “Pioneer” League). The team (“Valpo Crusaders”) has a 1-8 record, having just lost to the Marist Red Foxes. Go Valpo! Go Barry!
What a hoot! Fish calls Wazzou “podunk.” He doesn’t know that Washington State is ranked in the top 10 and is 8-1. Cal almost beat them last night too. You can’t fix stupid! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LEQ21CO4UDc&feature=onebox
I heard the end of the Cal-USC game on internet radio from Shanghai, and Cal won! Cal’s last victory against USC came on September 27, 2003 in triple overtime, blocking the Trojans from the BCS National Championship game, but not from the national title courtesy of the AP. I remember watching that game from Tahoe and celebrating. Now I’m celebrating again! Ha!
Here’s partisanship for you! “Barry Pruett February 21, 2019 at 3:29 PM
