Local author Jordan Fisher Smith to deliver lecture at Cal

I found this on my alma mater’s website:

Award-winning author Jordan Fisher Smith will deliver the first annual A. Starker Leopold Lecture, endowed to remember the work of the celebrated UCB professor and eldest son of Aldo Leopold by bringing fresh viewpoints on conservation to the UC community.

Smith will discuss Starker’s life and times and his role in Smith’s book ENGINEERING EDEN. The book tells the story of a fatal bear attack at Yellowstone National Park in 1972 and the lawsuit that followed, which pitted Leopold as an expert witness against Frank Craighead, a grizzly bear researcher who invented the radio collar. ENGINEERING EDEN won a California Book Award and was nominated for the PEN/E.O. Wilson Award for Literary Science Writing. “This is story-telling and historical narrative of the highest caliber,” said filmmakers Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan of the book.

Following the lecture Smith will sign books with Starker’s sister Estella Leopold, eminent paleobotanist, last living child of Aldo Leopold, and author of new book of recollections about the legendary Leopold shack that inspired A SAND COUNTY ALMANAC. Both books will be available for purchase.

Estella Leopold, Stories from the Leopold Shack: Sand County Revisited
Jordan Fisher Smith, Engineering Eden: The True Story of a Violent Death, a Trial, and the Fight Over Controlling Nature
