Greg Diaz is by far the most qualified for the County Clerk-Recorder race. It’s all spelled out on his resume, including being elected as president of the County Recorders Association of California, a high honor. That’s why we happily contributed $200 to his campaign.
But that isn’t stopping Diaz’s opponents from going after him, just like clerk-recorder wannabe Barry Pruett did in 2010 in an ugly race. Around here, this supposedly “nonpartisan” position has long been a political punching bag, going back to the Fran Freedle era.
Opponent Mary Anne Davis is wearing three hats nowadays — one as event manager/nonprofit manager with The Union newspaper (which is covering the race); another as president of the 49er Rotary Breakfast Club of Nevada City; and the other as a candidate for Diaz’s seat.
Mary Anne’s election website promotes videos of her friends and colleagues at The Union, the Sierra Master Chorale, and fellow Rotarians all endorsing her — though she has no experience working in an Elections Office.
Another video endorsement is from Supervisor Ed Scofield, who has a long-simmering personality conflict with Diaz — obvious to anyone who watches the BOS meetings. Even in the video, Scofield concedes that Mary Anne has a “high learning curve” but he likes her “personality.”
Scofield adds: “I’ve watched her put together The Union Home & Garden Show. That’s not an easy task.”
Ed, with all due respect, a Home & Garden Show is not the same as managing an elections office. Ed also does not address the estimated cost to train Mary Anne for the position, given her “high learning curve.”
But Diaz — with all his experience and elections know-how — is taking the high road. I checked out his website, and it features a springtime photo of the Fairgrounds, Ed’s former stomping grounds. It’s like stating: “Right back at ya”!

“For eight years, Greg served as the County Clerk-Recorder for the City and County of San Francisco managing the office and defining departmental policies, procedures, budget, operations and legislation on both the local and state level. He also served as the Assistant County Clerk-Recorder in San Francisco for four years and he worked in the City Attorney’s office for six years drafting legislation and litigation documents.
“Greg was appointed Nevada County Clerk-Recorder in June 2007 and re-elected twice in 2010 and 2014 respectfully. Subsequently, he has earned the California Professional Election Administrator Credential (2011) as well as obtaining CERA status nationally through the Election Center (Certified Elections/Registration Administrator) 2013. He was elected President of the County Recorders’ Association of California in December 2015 to a two year term. In June 2018, Greg will lead Nevada County Elections in implementing the California Voters’ Choice Act along with four other California Counties.”

Happy to vote for Diaz. Scofields vain attempt at endorsing an obviously unqualified candidate says loads about him and his role as a Supervisor. Beyond partisan, (see treatment of Secretary of State Padilla) Scofield gives Nevada County a bad name.
Diaz will get my vote. From what I understand about Scofield, he did step up to the plate for county supervisor because Don Bessee wanted in so I commend him for doing so and keeping Don out. Other than that I don’t think he’s done that great of a job.
A meltdown is in progress on Todd’s blog in the Clerk-Recorder’s race. Again, Diaz is the most qualified, and he has voted in all 21 past elections. Compare his record to his challengers. And that’s a “double dog” dare. lol.
