Last fall, The Union wrote an exaggerated article about vacancies in downtown Grass Valley. It was uninformed.
Now the newspaper has wised up and is reporting that new businesses are coming to town, including restaurants such as Watershed, MeZe and Café Tara. Imagine that!
Of course, the “scoop” came from Facebook. Watershed, for example, has its own Facebook page. It is slated to go where the Owl was located; I’ve enjoyed talking to the owners.
But at least The Union seems to do a good job of trolling Facebook for articles.
“The internet is changing how we communicate.”
In fact, there’s a fourth restaurant opening — the Wild Eye Pub. It’s too bad The Union left that one out.
We are so happy that MeZe found a brick and mortar home in Grass Valley at last, after being such a success at the Nevada City Farmer’s Market.
They make terrific falafel!
My vegetarian friends will rejoice this new addition to our region.
As a lover of healthy Middle eastern cuisine (and a pretty good Syrian style falafel maker myself) I do hope they expand their menu once they open their cafe.
BTW, any word on that beautiful old bank building,? What’s it to be?
Hi,
They are still forging ahead with the previous plans: https://sierrafoothillsreport.com/2017/10/23/scoop-big-plans-for-historic-nevada-county-bank-building-in-grass-valley/
It’s going to be a while.
I thought a six month turnaround seemed a bit ambitious, but I am certain the project will be lovely when it is completed. The building reminds me of a miniature Philadelphia Ritz-Carlton. We stayed there a few years ago and it was wonderful, but it has apparently undergone a 25 million dollar renovation recently. Guess we have to go back and check it out.
Wow. You’re right; https://www.bizjournals.com/philadelphia/news/2016/06/23/photo-gallery-of-ritz-carltons-25m-renovation.html
And here’s a coincidence: The new restaurant in that hotel is by Chef Richard Sandoval, a James Beard award- winning chef. I ate at another one of his restaurants last week, when I was in the Phoenix area for Spring Training.
While not mentioned in this article, Wild Eye Pub had its own front page article in The Union, January 5th of this year.
Sure, with information that is outdated. It was a big oversight to leave it out of this story, as Lucy Bottrell and other readers noted on Facebook. But then the bar is low, when you consider The Union’s “fake news” story about “roofie madness” at The Golden Era. Some of the worst business reporting I’ve ever read. Podunk.
Why do you say the information in January was outdated? According to Wild Eye Pub’s FB page from that same date, they compliment The Union’s error-free article.
Hi,
It’s outdated, because I think the pub’s opening is still at least 4-6 weeks out. Yet the headline reads it is set to reopen in March. As I said, The Union should have updated this story and included it with the others.
Better late than never with that revised opening date! https://www.theunion.com/news/local-news/grass-valleys-wild-eye-pub-shoots-for-a-late-april-opening/
