On the Lido Deck

“Compared to its surrounding counties, Nevada County has the highest percentage of residents over 65 years of age, and also has less ethnic variation,” according to the Nevada County Demographic report.

“There are fewer residents under the age of 30 in Nevada County (29%) than statewide (41%). In years past, the economic downturn accelerated the trend towards an older population as higher unemployment rates, typical of the ‘Great Recession,’ caused younger people with families to seek employment in urban areas.

“With the recent improvement in the County’s unemployment and economic status, the attractiveness of this area as a great place for young families continues to increase.”

  1. OMG! Almost a quarter of our local population are elders?
    Something must be done.
We should be made to will all of our assets to the county’s younger folks and then be be executed for the crime of being old.
    Well, it worked for Caligula.

  2. No, but it explains why we have some real economic development challenges in our community compared with neighboring counties — from providing enough services for seniors to building a sustainable economy. The latest one is a migration of younger people to places such as El Dorado County instead of ours. As a result, real estate agents are getting behind an effort to pass Prop. 90 in our County to spur some growth. 3. There have been many times while standing in line at grocery stores and looked around thinking, gosh we sure are a bunch of old geezers around here, and having turned 60 this year, I’m one of them.

  4. Steve,

Well then buddy, go have yourself some fun at the “Geezer Gig”, one of the best things about Nevada City!
The Bob Woods Trio makes being a boomer not such of a bummer.
    Get your BOOM on!
