A chance to meet “real” NC Scooper editor on September 5

You might recall the hateful “satire” that NC Scooper wrote targeting local Reinette Senum when she made unfortunate remarks about the Dallas police — and then apologized.

For her part, Senum complained that NC Scooper twisted her words, greatly exacerbating the situation. Many people didn’t understand the article was satire (albeit in poor taste). Others have expressed similar concerns. The authors — Senum has identified some of them to me — hide behind “fake” names.

Well now our towns get a chance to meet Randal ‘Fink’ Finkelstein of NC Scooper.

“LWV Western Nevada County will present a dynamic program on Tuesday, September 5, titled, “Fake News: A conversation with Snopes.com and the Nevada County Scooper.

“This timely evening will feature Brooke Binkowski, Managing Editor of Snopes, and Randall Finkelstein, editor of our own local satirical publication, The Nevada County Scooper.

“Is it news? Fake news? Satire? How can you tell? Who do you trust? Does it threaten democracy? This event is the opportunity to dive deeply into the effects and significance of our changing media landscape. This will replace our September general meeting.

“Join us on Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at 7:00pm at the Sierra College Multi-Purpose Room for this entertaining and informative discussion. Parking is $3.00 per vehicle. Parking passes must be purchased at the kiosk upon entering the Nevada County Campus. If able, we ask for a suggested $5.00 donation at the door to help defray the expense of hosting this event.”

  1. In following up with Reinette, she told me she received dozens of death threats in the wake of the Scooper’s “satire.”
