“10 Most White Trash Cities in California”

A reader sent me a link to a website called Roadsnacks.net   and a list “These are 10 most white trash cities in California.” It is quick to add, “This article is an opinion based on facts and is meant as infotainment. Don’t freak out.”

As it turns out Grass Valley is on the list (but not Nevada City or Truckee). I’m not stating I agree with list — or the nasty premise behind it — I’m just reporting it. What’s missing, of course, is all the wonderful assets in Grass Valley, ranging from historical sites and outdoor adventures, to local shopping and dining experiences, to arts and culture that draws people from all over the region.

The website used this criteria for its ranking:

“How we determined the most white trash cities in California?
Using publicly available government data, as well as Google Maps, we were able to collect the data on the following white trash metrics:

Cities where there are lots of white people
Cities where residents are poorer than average
Cities where a high number of residents are high school dropouts
Cities with a high number of single parents
High drug use
Higher than average Payday Loan Outlets
Violent cities (measured in aggravated assaults)
Cities with a high number of residents on welfare”

  1. That is a pathetic post and will do irreparable harm to GV.
I live in NC and do a fair share of shopping and enjoying of entertainment in GV. I actually have friends who live there- white, yes. Trashy, definitely not. There’s going to be quite the blowback about that analysis.

    1. Hi Karla,
We do most all our shopping and entertainment in GV for the reasons I stated: “… all the wonderful assets in Grass Valley, ranging from historical sites and outdoor adventures, to local shopping and dining experiences, to arts and culture that draws people from all over the region.”

Your point about the ranking doing “irreparable harm to GV” is unduly alarmist. Lots of folks will see through it. On the other hand, ignoring it won’t make it go away.

      1. Of course we locals know the real story- but people from out of the area will get the wrong idea about our sweet GV- not that I’m an advocate for more tourists..

  2. Sorry but this is a pathetic list that requires a response. Mendota’s population is approximately 11,400 people of which 11,100 are Hispanic. Give me a break and throw this list out the window as the trash it is.

  3. I’m not sure of the validity of the article but one has to acknowledge the Elephant in the Room. For years I’ve been hearing from Realtors, civic leaders, Rotarians, the endless parade of school administrators indicating that this community is just like Granite Bay, Marin County, Atherton. Then these same people are shocked when they find our schools are a 3 out of 10 in similar school rankings. The Elephant in the Room?: We have a lot of poor people here. Alot! Look at the Free & Reduced lunch stats for NU. It’s over 30%. I’ve been told that if everyone who is eligible applied, it would be over 40%.

  4. What a hoot! Todd Juvinall is going bonkers at this article — labeled by the author’s as “infotainment.” I did not endorse it either. In fact, I called out what was missing, such as no reference to a robust arts and culture scene.
Having said that, I wonder if Todd is an example of the “the lady who doth protest too much, methinks” — or just setting us straight. Todd? lol.

    1. Todd must be upset that he’s being called “angry and mean” on Facebook. He sure is struggling with the definition of “white trash,” mistakenly thinking it’s all about “white majority.” No, it’s not. “According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, white trash is defined as: “A term used broadly to define a person or group of persons whom embody the concepts of ignorance, racism, violence, alcoholism, poverty, and anglo-saxon ancestry. Similarly used with the term ‘cracker,’ ‘hillbilly’ or ‘redneck’.” And some other idiot on Rebane’s blog can’t even link to the right article (i.e., “ignorance.”). Sheesh.

Again, I do not endorse “ranking.” GV is a great place for arts and culture, shopping and dining. Even the website calls it “infotainment” and it obviously is an opinion. Having said that, I wonder if in Todd’s case “the lady doth protest too much.”

  5. And here’s the best Todd can do on his blog:
    “Todd JuvinallAugust 26, 2017 at 9:10 PM
I guess the FUE is having a hard time accepting he is part of the ‘white trash’ of the area. LOL!”

    Go Todd!

  6. Grass Valley has some pretty trashy neighborhoods, but so does all of Western Nevada County. I wouldn’t label this town a white trash town. Ukiah should be on that list, not this place.
I wonder how much of the lack of money and people being poor around here is due to the high cost of housing that drains people financially? Art centers are fine, the restaurants are overpriced and mediocre at best ( I’m spoiled with foodie heaven up in Portland) but none of that matters for people who struggle to pay housing and earn enough income to live.
I do know that Nevada County has one of the lowest rates for counties in California for percentage of people receiving food stamps and cash aid. The higher minimum wage has made people over income for getting food stamps.

  7. On the flip side, according to the website, Alta Sierra ranked 4th and Lake Wildwood ranked 5th as “Least Ghetto”!

  8. Steve Frisch asks Todd Juvinall a poignant question on his blog. Todd is a real piece of work:

    “Todd Juvinall — August 27, 2017 at 6:33 PM
Trump was given a award by the Black s of New York. Along with Rosa Parks. So it is true. Don’t wet yourself Jaye.”

    “Steven Frisch — August 28, 2017 at 5:35 AM
Just wondering Todd, who are the “Blacks of New York?” Is there such an organization? Or are they a family, you know like the Vanderbilts of New York? Here is more background on the Ellis Island Award …https://www.good.is/articles/trump-naacp-award-inner-cities-debunked
