Chronicle, Bee, Auburn Journal win numerous top honors in statewide newspaper contest; The Union mostly gets “honorable mentions”

“The San Francisco Chronicle was named the state’s best large newspaper Saturday by the California Newspaper Publishers Association, the second year in a row that the paper has won the contest’s top prize,” as the newspaper reported.

“Besides the general excellence prize, The Chronicle won first-place awards for feature stories in the food and sports sections, an editorial about San Francisco homelessness, a business package on vacation rentals, agricultural reporting, feature photography, lifestyle coverage, photo and graphic illustration.

Meanwhile, the Bee won “two first-place and four second-place awards Saturday in the California Newspaper Publishers Association’s annual Better Newspapers Contest for work produced in 2016,” as the newspaper is reporting.

The Auburn Journal won five first place awards (for columns, education, a news photo, a feature and photo illustration), a second place award, and three honorable mentions. One of the Auburn Journal’s “honorable mentions” was for general excellence.

The Union received three first place awards for its category — for an article on the bark beetle, a special section and an online photo essay. It received three second place awards — for an article on marijuana and an editorial cartoon (“nice use of color”).

Nine of The Union’s 15 awards were honorable mentions.

The list of statewide winners (filtered from 1,134 total entries) are here.

Congratulations to all the winners!

  1. Really? Is the Chron really the best large newspaper in California. Is it superior to the LA Times or the Sacramento Bee? Too much of the Chron is reprinted from other sources. Not enough of it is actually written by Chron staff. Yes, the number of misspellings has gone down since the hay days of the 80″s and 90’s, but it’s still not in the same league as the LA or NY Times, Washington Post, et. al.
