What a hoot! The Obamas on holiday with Richard Branson at his island in the British Virgin Islands (BVI). I got to know Richard when I covered the airlines for the San Francisco Chronicle in the ’80s and ’90s. In 1993, I flew to London and interviewed Richard when Virgin Atlantic Airways launched service from San Francisco to London as he built up the airline.
Shannon came along and we visited him at his home in London’s Holland Park neighborhood. Then we all flew back on Virgin for the inaugural Heathrow-London flight. Branson let me sit in the cockpit for takeoff from Heathrow. It was a coincidence but the Vice Chairman of Wells Fargo at the time, Clyde Ostler, was onboard for the flight. I pinned him down for an interview, because he had nowhere to go. Ha! Good memories.
