Trump repeats lie about popular vote in meeting with lawmakers

“President Trump used his first official meeting with congressional leaders on Monday to falsely claim that millions of unauthorized immigrants had robbed him of a popular vote majority, a return to his obsession with the election’s results even as he seeks support for his legislative agenda,” the New York Times is reporting.

“The claim, which he has made before on Twitter, has been judged untrue by numerous fact-checkers. The new president’s willingness to bring it up at a White House reception in the State Dining Room is an indication that he continues to dwell on the implications of his popular vote loss even after assuming power.

“Mr. Trump appears to remain concerned that the public will view his victory — and his entire presidency — as illegitimate if he does not repeatedly challenge the idea that Americans were deeply divided about sending him to the White House to succeed President Barack Obama.

“Mr. Trump received 304 electoral votes to capture the White House, but he fell almost three million votes short of Hillary Clinton in the popular vote. That reality appears to have bothered him since Election Day, prompting him to repeatedly complain that adversaries were trying to undermine him.

“Moving into the White House appears not to have tempered that anxiety. Several people familiar with the closed-door meeting Monday night, who asked to remain anonymous in discussing a private conversation, said Mr. Trump used the opportunity to brag about his victory.”

  1. Right on schedule- Though he had to take a little time to kill a pro choice bill, after a million women marched to to show support for keeping the government out of their vagina’s, Bye Bye Keystone XL, bye bye Dakota Access Pipeline. It’s not just alternative facts it’s the alternative universe we live in now——
Treaties with Indians will be torn up fast if there is oil beneath their feet.

    1. Well stated Chip. Hilary Hodge wrote an outstanding column both this week and last. Unfortunately a woman, yep, a woman decided to chew into her.

      1. . . . and Mrs Schlafly has to do with this how Judith? I seem to remember her as a conservative against women’s rights. Now if you’re referring to the woman who cackled against Hilary’s post – I very much agree.

    2. Hi Annie,

Yes, my attempt at grim humor, pretty much the only kind I can summon these days.
The woman never changed her hair or her mind.
I remember in the seventies when, in opposition to unisex toilets, she tried to tell women that ladies’ rooms were the only safe place to hide from rapists.
      Jaysus!

I have grieved more for Tilikum since he passed on 12/6/17.
At least he’s out of pain.

      1. Annie,

It occurs to me that due to all our online personas, we don’t really understand each other as much as we could if we hung together out in person. We are talking in sound bites here so misunderstandings are bound to occur.
I don’t feel good about being misunderstood, so just know that in cinematic shorthand, I was reared by a cross between Lana Turner and Mommy Dearest and a cross between Geronimo and the Great Santini. I had a handsome Native American brother who fell out of orbit and committed suicide because he never was able to reconcile not being white in our bi-racial family.
I grew up all over, but my experiences in the deep South as a youngster during the civil rights era, formed much of my opinion of humankind.
Therefore, I tend to favor the humor of Dorothy Parker, Molly Ivins and Sophie Tucker.
Pardon me if on occasion I cause consternation by being a little salty and cynical.
I’m pretty sure the gentlemen reading this blog were quite mirthless about my solution for saving the world from loaded penises.
        Sorry fellows, just kidding.
Annie, you’re okay, I enjoy your comments.
I know some have accused you of secretly being Shannon Pelline.
But I have met and spoken with that lady and I would be very surprised if that were true.
        Cheers!

      2. Annie is not Shannon Pelline. Judith, you need better intel. Spending too much time with the “shifters” or widows? Lol

      3. It’s cool Judith and you are right that since we don’t know each other we don’t understand each others’ humor. I never knew you’ve mistaken me for Shannon! I’ve never met her but I understand she is a warm, intelligent, caring person so for that, thank you for the compliment.

  2. Trumps new (proposed) head of the EPA has sued that Mercury is ok, will nerve gas be next? Here comes the suction dredging debate all over again. A “timely” Board of Supervisors issue would be a vote to “ban fracking in Nevada County’s part of the Sierra”. The war over water will make all other wars look small- and this war is only 4 days old.

      1. It came from a “Hitler Quotes” web sight… so who knows for sure.. Goebbels was just as evil as Hitler so six of one and a half dozen of the other.

      2. I saw that site too, but several others said it was actually Goebbels who was the Minister of Propaganda. Either attribution still illustrates their and Trump’s belief system.

  3. LaMalfa needs to go. He is a climate denier and a gravy train boot licker who is milking the system for all he can get while cutting funding for the sick and poor. It is unfortunate that Charlie Brown from Auburn didn’t (won’t?) run again. I think given the current political shift that is occurring in this area he could win. Or maybe Heidi Hall will take another stab at him down the road. Otherwise the Democrats don’t seem to have anybody of note to offer up.

  4. I think it is going to be interesting to see what happened as Americans come to the realization that they elected a President who is mentally ill, bonkers… crazy as a loon. I think we are going to see if the Constitution stands up to the test of its checks and balances principle and what role Congress and he Courts will play respectively. We may be in a situation where the only way to balance making a bad choice is essentially “containment” by other branches of government. The loyal opposition is not going to “settle down” as all of our local right wing bloggers are advocating–people are going to demand that Congress and the Courts step up to counter the illness in the White House–this thing is going to escalate and become a social movement against the administration of Trump.

  5. There are no longer any checks and balances with the far right in control of Congress, the White house, and the Supreme court. The court is supposed to be the final check on the politicians, but it is (will be) stuffed with far right thinking ideologues who have been hand picked just for this occasion. The environment is going to take a hit it may not be able to recover from. Perhaps trump is the anti-christ of Bible fame and the apocalypse is what is going to happen to the flora and fauna from climate change and pollution.

  6. After seeing Trumps immigration policy decision today, I’m wondering about Americans traveling abroad and how other countries might just turn you around at the gate as well. To say nothing of how unsafe it will be when you show up abroad with an American passport.
