2016 in charts. (And can Trump deliver in 2017?)

“Lost in the Trump tsunami was the strong economy that President Obama will be leaving him,” as The New York Times is reporting this morning. “Unemployment is down to 4.6 percent, the lowest since August 2007 and a stunning decline from the 7.8 percent when Mr. Obama took office. The economy has expanded by nearly 15 percent (adjusted for inflation), the stock market has nearly tripled, auto sales have notched records, the federal deficit has been cut by more than half and house prices nationally are above past peaks. Even real median incomes ended marginally higher.”

“Immigration became a hot-button topic in part because of the perception that new arrivals take jobs from Americans and in part because growing diversity can make white Americans uncomfortable,” The Times added. “Mr. Trump exploited these fears during his campaign, with his wall and calls to deport illegal arrivals. But in fact, the number of illegal immigrants in this country has been declining. Meanwhile, a conservative think tank estimated that deporting approximately 11 million undocumented individuals would cost $400 billion to $600 billion, take 20 years and reduce gross domestic product by 5.7 percent ($1.6 trillion.)”

  1. Annie Fox says:

All that progress is Obama’s fault.

  2. Joe Koyote says:

Just like republicans blamed Obama for all of the problems Bush left behind, they will also claim victory for all of the good things that have happened. But of course, they won’t mention how the good things happened despite them not because of them.

  3. Karla Arens says:

Who do you think will take the credit?

    • Nielsen A Locke says:

Trump and by Tweeting πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ as he tweeted he stopped the Ethics Committee from being Gutted not according to the News and the Republicans.

  4. Chip Wilder says:

All this with the least productive congress since 1947. Since 08 when they met and promised to do nothing with or for this president, they kept their promise. Around the country they have put forth more bills to prevent a woman’s right to choose than anything else. Anything. As if closing Planned Parenthood clinics would somehow translate to good government. DUH.
The bank bailout, that Obama was left with, should have ended the so called tax payer funded bailouts. But- what happened in Indiana? Pence, the vp elect was governor of that state and never did anything for manufacturing leaving his state– for years.. The crotch grabber comes in and gives away $7,000,000 in Indianan’s tax money, with the promise that United Technologies (that’s Carrier) will get some preferential treatment in Pentagon contracts.
Conflict of interest ended when the orange clownstick refused to let us see his incriminating tax returns-

  5. Judith Lowry says:

    Chip,

Trump has expressed favor for many of PP women’s health services which one would hope include education and contraception.
The main issue seems to be abortion.

  6. Chip Wilder says:

Abortions (in the form of referals) are actually not a big part of what Planned Parenthood β€” 3 percent ( it has been argued that the number is as high a 10% because these people get “other” services as well) of the services it provided last year were abortion-related (2014 numbers), according to the organization’s annual report. (For a sense of the scope of that, abortions accounted for about 328,000 of the group’s nearly 10.6 million services provided last year.) Many of those are rape, incest, and Uncle Bob. Keep a woman’s right to choose. Keep government out –
All over the country these religious old white men terrorists are attacking a service for the poor. Stupid——-redirecting funding to other clinics could limit lower-income Americans’ access to family planning services, as other clinics may not have the capacity to handle the new customers.
What tops the list of services at Planned Parenthood? STDs, followed by contraceptives.
What? Just kick those folks to the curb?

  7. Judith Lowry says:

    Not saying that.
I am all for “U.S. out of my uterus!”.
    Not sure about your stats.
I sat with a couple of my college chums through abortions and consoled some others who told me about theirs later.
Alcohol was a big factor as well as the fleeting infatuations of the young.
Education and raising self-esteem is the only thing that will make abortion rare.
As it is, it remains the part of that momentary loss of judgement for which the woman always pays the higher price.

  8. jon smith says:

I am STRONGLY in favor of a woman’s right to chose. However, I’m dismayed by the number of unwanted pregnancies that are simply shrugged off. Contraceptives are widely and freely available and if a woman is too drunk too often or uneducated to remember to take her pill then there are other longer term alternatives. It takes less time to get an IUD or an implant that it does to perform an abortion. I’m appalled at the number of sexually active teens at our local high school who don’t even pretend to have safe sex. If there is a back lash by the conservative bible thumpers, these lazy sexually active boys and girls/men and women have largely themselves to blame.

  9. Chip Wilder says:

Again I give you our new Cabinet Member on Texas Biblical wisdom –

  10. Chip Wilder says:

And then there is this about our tin pot president elect, cause he’s like “really smart”. . Happy New year-
We will have to have a military coup to take this guy out of office, because he thinks he is a king.

https://www.indivisibleguide.com is guidebook published by progressive ex-congressional aides( young people) to help us overcome the Trump Regime. It’s based on the Tea Party model which was so successful in taking over our government. They wrote a playbook which can now be used to take back our country. This is a real movement. Check it out. Smart and informative- makes it easy to take action

  13. Annie Fox says:

I love Cheryl Cook’s recent letter to the Union. She nails it! I’m sure there’s a lot of crying going on over on other blog(s) however.

  14. Chip Wilder says:

Proof of Life—– Priceless— How about this- My letter was finally published in the non- Union today. Although we will have to wait to see, I hope that they will write an in depth story about who our sheriff issues concealed weapons to in this county. How many are out there. There are over 8000 in Sacramento County according to their sheriff and he intends to step up issuing them.
As for imaginary- Try and keep up after they privatize your Medicare with a voucher-
