‘What is Aleppo?’: Gary Johnson’s misstep exposes shortcomings of his presidential candidacy

“Libertarian presidential nominee Gary Johnson has doggedly sought the spotlight in his long-shot presidential bid, but on Thursday he got an unwelcome jolt of notoriety when he blanked on the name of Aleppo, a city at the heart of the protracted and bloody war in Syria,” as the L.A. Times is reporting

“The gaffe, which was instantly and widely mocked, threatened to taint Johnson’s still-unformed reputation among most voters and undermine his effort to establish himself as a viable option to the two major parties’ historically unpopular nominees.

“’The question is, does this become the one thing that people know about him?’ said David Boaz, executive vice president of the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank.

“The episode also exposed the limitations of Johnson’s quirky persona as he tries to woo voters from Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton. And it came at a particularly crucial time as Johnson seeks a spot in the three presidential debates, a milestone that would offer an immense credibility boost to his candidacy and the Libertarian Party as a whole.”

  1. No question, its a huge flop for a guy running for POTUS, and it’s not like he had to know where battle lines among which fighters control what neighborhoods in Aleppo. Then again, when you get out of the East Coast chattering class on cable news shows like Morning Joe, who knows anything about what is going on in Syria or knows about Aleppo? I doubt if Mike Barnacle could answer basic question about the battle of Manbij, like how many days it took to liberate Manbij …..73. Who was the lead commander of the SDF forces on Manbij? A Kurdish woman.

Syria, its war, and people here in the US disengage or are burned out from the Iraq war, or just give some lame excuse for being apathetic about a part of the world the US is neck deep with having a big part in creating that mess. Around here I hear people say “I’m anti war”. Well no kidding, who is for war? Its both easy and impossible to be anit war in the US. Easy because we don’t have an invasion force outside our town, like Kobane did in the September of 2014, Its impossible because the US has such a huge war machine that we are citizens of. If the only information people get about Syria is from US media, they are terribly uninformed about what is going on there, the good and the bad. And there are good things happening, its called Rojava.
