Editor’s note: I first met Doug Elmets when I wrote about Chevron, Arco, Unocal and the other oil companies for The San Francisco Chronicle, and Doug was in government affairs at Arco. Later, we reunited in Sacramento, where he worked on Doug Ose’s Congressional campaign and Thunder Valley. This is a great article!
“Iowa native Doug Elmets will speak on the closing day of the Democratic National Convention and like most of the others on the stage, he will endorse Hillary Clinton,” as the Des Moines Register is reporting.
‘He won’t be the first Iowa-born speaker this week, and he certainly won’t be the first to talk about why he believes Donald Trump is wrong for the country. But Elmets is not like any of the others that Democrats have heard from so far.
“He’s not only a lifelong Republican, but he cut his teeth in politics working for Chuck Grassley, now Iowa’s senior senator. He worked as a spokesman and speechwriter in President Ronald Reagan’s White House. As a political consultant in Sacramento, he has built a successful business working to defeat Democrats. He’s a frequent national media commentator from the GOP perspective.
“He’s never endorsed a Democrat before. He plans to make his first time a memorable one.
“His planned remarks, he said, “are provocative, to say the least.”
“For example, the words ‘petulant, dangerously unbalanced reality TV star,’ — a description he used for Trump in a recent guest commentary in the Register — appears in the draft of his speech. He also calls the Republican platform ‘the most alarming collections of extreme positions imaginable,’ laced with anti-immigrant, anti-gay and anti-women positions anchored by ‘Trump’s fantasy wall at the Mexican border.'”
