The Dark Knight

“Welcome to a world without rules. (I want you to read this paragraph in your super-scary movie trailer voice),” David Brooks writes in The New York Times. “Welcome to a world in which families are mowed down by illegal immigrants, in which cops die in the streets, in which Muslims rampage the innocents and threaten our very way of life, in which the fear of violent death lurks in every human heart.

“Sometimes in that blood-drenched world a dark knight arises. You don’t have to admire or like this knight. But you need this knight. He is your muscle and your voice in a dark, corrupt and malevolent world.

“Such has been the argument of nearly every demagogue since the dawn of time. Aaron Burr claimed Spain threatened the U.S in 1806. A. Mitchell Palmer exaggerated the Red Scare in 1919 and Joe McCarthy did it in 1950.

“And such was Donald Trump’s law-and-order argument in Cleveland on Thursday night. This was a compelling text that turned into more than an hour of humorless shouting. It was a dystopian message that found an audience and then pummeled them to exhaustion.

“Will it work?”

  1. I am concerned that even if Hillary’s Arrogant Groupies manages to beat Drumpf’s Duckheaded Dimwits in November (this election is being brought to you by the World Wrestling Federation, WWF). the DDD’s will be even more angry and afraid, and there will be an uptick in violence KKK style towards anyone outside the Christian Dominion Promise Keeper’s mold. It will be just as random as the crap we’ve already experienced.

I am not looking forward to the next four years, because neither side is really very optimistic or forward looking. I worked hard for Bernie, the only candidate who is, and who has the sense to realize that going solar Big Time is the only real route to avoiding climate catastrophe. Yes I will vote for Hillary, no I do not think she will win, because, in part, her followers have adopted a second class citizen stance towards Bernie followers. The end result is that too many Bernie followers will go the Cruz route, at least keeping some sense of personal dignity.

If this winter does not contain at least the amount of snow we got in 2015 to 2016, we will likely sell and look seriously into moving to Canada. We have no desire to stick around while the Central Valley goes Sahara on us, thanks to disastrous, greed driven via corporate lobbyists’ activities in both mainstream parties. Hillary says she’ll end Citizen’s United, why do I doubt that?

    1. Great point although I understand that Bernie supporters may go green rather than Hillary. It’s going to be interesting next week.

    2. Thinking of Canada? If you like Nevada City then you might want to check out Nelson BC. Actually there are lots of areas in Southeast British Columbia that have a good growing season, lots of orchards, vineyards, and dairy, fairly mild winters and fantastic Provincial and National Parks. And of course, no gun nut culture. The Glacier Park east of Revelstoke, it really does have glaciers.

  2. In a world where the courts have approved the notion cops can be deselected because they test too high on an IQ test, in a world where cops do not use at least a pair of binoculars to differentiate between a toy truck and a potential weapon, I feel I have landed on the idiot planet. Drones are here, with full live view from the camera to the controller a half mile away. Buy and use them to check out folks before shooting them. Attach a microphone to a drone via 10 feet of cable, and go listen to what is going on as well has having video.

For God sake’s, have cops buy liability insurance, just like doctors have to, to put a damper on itchy trigger fingers, and buy and use Net Guns, and use the taser the police have already been issued. Approach subject with taser in weak hand, pointed at subject, and gun in strong hand, pointed down. Suicide by cop will go way down, if they think the are just going to get zapped. Use again a drone with a taser, to distinguish between those with and without guns.
