Union columnist Boardman’s latest blunder: the “Fathers Day Classic” bike race

You can’t make this stuff up! George Boardman, The Union’s weekly columnist, waxes on in his column that runs on Memorial Day about the “Fathers Day Classic” bike race in Nevada City.

Huh? George, it’s called the “Nevada City Classic Bicycle Race,” not the “Fathers Day Classic.” It is on Father’s Day, though.

What a dumbbell! I guess we have to excuse George. His email address is still an AOL.com account. How about upgrading to “gmail”? Does anybody edit George’s column? ROFLOL!

In its heyday, including “Bicycle” in the title was superfluous. It was simply The Nevada City Classic (as shown on old race posters that hang on a wall at the chamber of commerce office). And before that, of course, it was called Tour of Nevada City.

But whatever a person chooses to call it, I hope the 2016 edition is a big success.

You can always depend on Steve to give us the full history of that great race. Thanks Steve.

        Dan,
Except that it’s 2016, and the race is called the “Nevada City Bicycle Classic.” And it never was called the “Fathers (sic) Day Classic.”

  2. jeffpelline says:

Yes, I think that’s where “Bored Georgeman” confused “Nevada City Classic” with “Father’s Day Classic.” But now it is called the “Nevada City Classic Bicycle Race.” So he got it wrong (again).

I thought I was the only one who judged a writer by his email address.

  4. steve cottrell says:

The June edition of the Nevada City Advocate has a display ad for the June 19 bicycle race, (apparently designed and submitted by race organizers), and I’m pleased to see that it’s billed simply as the 56th Annual Nevada City Classic. The universal logo uses the 1980s title, as does the ad copy. In addition, the website is nevadacityclassic.com

Seems the race is enjoying “Back to the Future” status. And that’s great.

Hope it’s a huge success, with a big crowd and competitive races –– and glad the redundant Nevada City Classic Bicycle Race or Nevada City Bicycle Classic names are no longer needed to promote the event.

    Steve,
Oh, The Advocate didn’t take George Boardman’s word for it and call it the “Fathers (sic) Day Classic.” Which is wrong.
As for your point, the race has been poorly attended in recent years, at least by some locals’ measurements, so it makes all the sense in the world to stick with “Nevada City Classic Bicycle Race,” because it might attract some “new blood.”
The title of the website is “Nevada City Classic Bicycle Race.”
What I like about the old-timers is that they argue until they’re blue in the face for it to be “just like the old days.” Unfortunately, the world is growing up all around western Nevada County. Ouch!
