The Union mistakenly puts words in Don Bessee’s mouth in an “Other Voices”

The Union has a new publisher as of this week, but that hasn’t put an end to the “daily mistakes” in the newspaper. And the latest one is a hoot, coming at the expense of vocal, local anti-marijuana activist Don Bessee, who can’t seem to get enough of himself.

On page A5 this weekend, The Union is running an other voices titled “Medical marijuana policies stuck in the past” (see below). The article is signed “Craig Marquard lives in Nevada City,” but a subhead inside the article erroneously credits “Other Voices: Don Bessee.” (The online version has another mistake: It spells Craig’s name two different ways: “Marquad”in the headline and “Marquard” at the bottom of the commentary).

Imagine that: Don Bessee’s mouth is big enough to fit his own words — as well as the ones erroneously attributed to him by The Union. ROFLOL!

  1. Just Numbers-
To quote Dan and Hank the County produces $440 million worth of pot annually. Sarah Keene’s 2014 study that was printed in the Union stated that the county actually produced “$51.5 million annually, and the county’s department of agriculture reported the total value of crop production in 2013, including fruit and vegetable crops, timber and livestock, at $23.2 million”.
Then Dan and Hank go on to state that Colorado isn’t seeing the tax benefits of pot sales.
Colorado had a one day tax holiday because of pot sales-
Because of The Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights, a measure championed by conservatives in Colorado, the constitutional provision requires voters to approve new taxes based on estimates of collections and state spending. If the actual amount exceeds the estimates, refunds are necessary. http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_28252221/colorado-offer-one-day-tax-holiday-marijuana

Dan and Hank go on to throw in the “environmental card”, when they could really care less. The poisoning of rivers and streams should be prosecuted, no matter who does it, whether it’s a gold mine, timber harvest, tomato or a pot grow. We have our very own “super fund cleanup” mine with the Lava Cap Mine, but if it were up to our right leaning Dan and Hank they would approve more mining not less. …. We have a bio-mass plant plans on the table ready to go, but Dan and Hank won’t speak of it. They set up, and ran off the last Sup who talked about it……
The City of Nevada City just raised the sales tax. The BOS is just about to raise our county taxes again, they just won’t talk about it during the election cycle.
    Just numbers-
During the election cycle throwing around numbers is political sport. In our county it is no exception, except the minor league aspect of course-

  2. More and more I think the unspoken goal of some is to make sure this an attractive area for retired law enforcement, with their CALPERS pensions. OK but this does not address the ongoing problem of families, jobs and an aging demographic. To get that, we need to acknowledge that we’re in California, where the demographics are more diverse. What do we offer the college-educated millennial? Not much.

  3. Don Bessee is blowing a gasket on George Rebane’s blog! I can’t think of a more incompetent and unqualified “spokesman” for Yes on W. Proof that our community needs “deeper benches” no matter what side you’re on:
“PE (Paul Emery) you have become so trite. You want to pretend that the other real world overhead observations do not exist. GPS and google are what they are no matter what bernie bros and tin foil hat girls say.
“Do you really think the few hours of NCSO chopper time cares about you and grannies ganga?
What about the BS pot dealers trying to shop a picture of a guy putting a sign in the ground as pulling up one of the few and far between no on w signs?
“Perhaps we should talk about the nearly 900 stolen YES ON W signs from he NCRP and the independent business committee. Shows the bernie bros don’t give a shit about our free speech rights. Scum bags from out of the area are trying to deny our local control to line their pockets. The diversion of weed from here does not help patients it impacts the poor communities of color like Sac. A population that is the least able to bear that additional burden the drug dealers are putting on their already difficult futures. Victims rights matter more than the scum bags profits.

    1. Bernie Bros. I’ve met quite a few who are very nice, considerate, and kind people. Tin foil hat girls, at least they have decent jobs on Faux News and are paying taxes (I would hope). Scum bags, it seems there’s an old saying about taking one to know one. I have no plans to support this ill conceived measure.

  4. I was disappointed to see Don Bessee on the Yes on W at the LOWV forum coming up on Thursday. If this county does wish some clear conversation on MM or legalization they will need to bring voices from the middle of the issue.

    1. Yes. I don’t think the Sheriff or the BOS cares. That’s too bad, because Don is not fit for that role. It’s like Dr. Frankenstein creating a “monster.” LOL.

      1. Now the leader of the hard-right political cesspool, Todd Juvinall, has weighed in that “Don is making a difference.” Sure, just like Todd has. Is this what a college-educated millennial wants to come home to? LOL.

      2. Don’s really gonna hate my No vote on Measure W. I smile because of that, I laugh because there is nothing he can do about it.

  5. The only one who comments on Todd’s blog anymore is “fish,” and he lives in Carmichael. How pathetic for “native son” Todd. LOL.
