Local newspaper gives curt treatment to campaign finance reports

For whatever reason, The Union is giving curt treatment to campaign finance reports this election season.

Instead of explaining to readers the “what,” “why” and “how” behind the donors, the newspaper is just listing the “who” in a box beside the article.

Examples: Just listing “Americans for Good Government” as a contributor to Duane Strawser’s campaign or just listing Michael Funk as a contributor to Heidi Hall’s campaign.

For those who don’t know “Americans for Good Government” is a tea party-influenced PAC, as we’ve been reporting. And Michael Funk is CEO of United Natural Foods and a “steward” of the Yuba River.

It is shortchanging the reader just to list a group or person’s name. The Union needs to “dig deeper.” Kudos to YubaNet for its ongoing local political coverage.
