Ex-workers of The Union and its parent are flourishing elsewhere

I’m looking forward to having lunch with a former colleague of The Union, Carol Guild, in Auburn this week at Monkey Cat, one of our favorite restaurants in the region. Carol was features editor of The Union, and now is features editor of the Auburn Journal. It was a loss for The Union when she departed — and self-inflicted by management.

I also enjoy visiting with David Bunker, a former worker at the Sierra Sun (Swift’s sister newspaper in Truckee) when I’m in Truckee and Lake Tahoe. David is now an award-winning journalist at Moonshine Ink in Truckee.

Another excellent “ex-Swiftie” journalist who comes to mind is Kirk Caraway, publisher of Carson Now, an online startup. I was happy to recommend Kirk for a prestigious John S. Knight Journalism Fellowships at Stanford when he asked. He was accepted into the program and did well. The Knight fellowship is now run by a former colleague of mine at The Chronicle.

There’s a trend here; one that Swift and The Union should address more seriously.
