NC Scooper and The Union “sitting in a tree”?

sittinginatreeSmall towns are sometimes like grammar school or middle school. I’ve recently enjoyed watching a budding courtship between The Union and the parody website NC Scooper. Though supposedly independent, they apparently need each other.

First, The Union wrote a flattering feature on NC Scooper on the front page, going so far as to protect the editor’s anonymity.

Then Publisher Jim Hemig (while on his way out the door) flattered the Scooper again, naming it the “best local blogger,” writing, “I only added this category to make nice with the folks responsible for this satire website. They pick on me a lot. But it’s crazy funny.”

Louis “Lou” LaPlante of NC Scooper was beside himself with glee in social media. On Facebook, Lou said he was greatly honored, and plans were made for a get together over beers, along with some civic-minded Grass Valley citizens. In the end, the plans were postponed, but it’s become a real mutual admiration society. Small towns are a hoot!
