Pence’s grand slam highlights Giants’ 12-6 win over Dodgers

“Bruce Bochy and Dave Roberts, once teacher and pupil, now opposing managers in a great and ancient rivalry, shook hands at home plate before the Giants and Dodgers rechristened AT&T Park for 2016 on Thursday,” as the San Francisco Chronicle is reporting.

“They told one another, ‘Good luck, and let’s go at it.’

“Eighteen runs and 30 hits later, the Giants had a 12-6 victory in their home opener that telegraphed an important message to the 41,940 fans who stuffed the waterfront ballpark: If this offense stays healthy, it will be fun to watch and capable of overcoming a lot of bad stuff.

“It was death by pinpricks — mostly singles, a few extra-base hits — until Hunter Pence unsheathed a sword and cracked a grand slam in the eighth inning to establish a rout in the Giants’ first home opener against the Dodgers in 11 years.”
