Stonehouse could be revitalized in New Year, cocktails at Lefty’s

Here’s a sampling of what’s new in our region’s dining scene:

The historic Stonehouse building , across the street from Lefty’s Grill in Nevada City, could be revitalized in the New Year as a destination for culinary artistry, a tapas bar, visiting chefs, weddings, events and more, we’ve learned. Jonathan Rowe, founder and CEO of The Village, a popular event center in San Francisco, has expressed an interest in the historic building. The plan would compliment the burgeoning food, drink and nightlife scene in Nevada City. This includes the Golden Era lounge, Los Mineros taqueria, Wheyward Girl Creamery and Three Forks Bakery & Brewing Co.

Now in its eighth year, Lefty’s Grill is expanding again, adding new upstairs seating and expanding its banquet area. Lefty’s also has applied for a liquor license (think craft cocktails) to go with its craft beer and wine offerings. Lefty’s has upgraded its menu (with entrees such as pork tenderloin with a blackberry gastrique). In 2013, they moved from downtown Nevada City to a larger location at 101 Broad St., across Hwy. 49. Lefty’s is known for imaginative award-winning pizzas.

The restaurant has relocated from Old Town Auburn to 13460 Lincoln Way, which had been home to iconic Lou LaBonte’s since 1946. The location next to Interstate- 80—with a glowing sign—is expected to draw skiers and boarders en route to Tahoe this winter. Awful Annies is open for breakfast and lunch. The menu features omelets, eggs benedict, waffles and pancakes, burgers, grilled sandwiches, chile, soups and salads, and bread pudding for dessert. Its Bloody Mary is famous. Awful Annies also has a location in Lincoln.

For skiers and boarders on the go, we can’t think of a better spot for fresh sandwiches, juices, smoothies, soups, salads and fresh, organic snacks. The Tahoe Central Market and Deli is centrally located in Kings Beach on Tahoe’s North Shore. It is a convenient stop on route to Northstar, Diamond Peak and Squaw|Alpine. The homemade breakfast sandwiches are delicious for an on- the-go meal, and the juice bar offers fresh “pick me ups.” Examples include “Sweet Thing,” with carrot, apple and orange.
