Rush Limbaugh: Pope is preaching “pure Marxism”

“Pope Francis: Successor to St. Peter … the people’s pontiff … Marxist?,” as CNN is reporting.

“That’s what conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh suggests, calling the Pope’s latest document ‘pure Marxism.’

“Limbaugh blasted the pontiff on Wednesday, a day after Francis released ‘Evangelii Gaudium’ (The Joy of the Gospel), a 50,000-word statement that calls for church reform and castigates elements of modern capitalism.

“Limbaugh’s segment, now online and entitled ‘It’s Sad How Wrong Pope Francis Is (Unless It’s a Deliberate Mistranslation By Leftists),’ takes direct aim at the pope’s economic views, calling them ‘dramatically, embarrassingly, puzzlingly wrong.’

“The Vatican issued the English translation of ‘Evangelii,’ which is known officially as an apostolic exhortation and unofficially as a pep talk to the worlds 1.5 billion Catholics.

“Francis – the first pope ever to hail from Latin America, where he worked on behalf of the poor in his native Argentina – warned in “Evangelii” that the “idolatry of money” would lead to a “new tyranny.”

“The Pope also blasted ‘trickle-down economics,’ saying the theory ‘expresses a crude and naïve trust in the goodness of those wielding economic power.’

“The Pope’s critique of capitalism thrilled many liberal Catholics, who have long called on church leaders to spend more time and energy on protecting the poor from economic inequalities.

“But Limbaugh, whose program is estimated to reach 15 million listeners, called the Pope’s comments ‘sad’ and ‘unbelievable.'”

  1. It seems that the only retort to criticism the right has left in its arsenal of propaganda is to resort to the worn out cold war labeling of critics as “socialist or communist”. They have nothing of substance to say and no logical defense for the greed they champion. The sad part is that such an approach still resonates with a certain portion of the population who still think they are fighting the cold war and are more than willing to believe and pass on such garbage in an effort to relieve the cognitive dissonance created between their twisted ideology and reality.

  2. The Catholic church has advocated the values expressed by the Pope a bit longer than the Limbaugh’s of the world have been spewing their venomous brand of “conservatism”. Maybe Father Rush should establish his own religion, then get out into the real world and sell it to humanity. His Latin American tour would be a big hit with the populace.

  3. Limbaugh is an entertainer and nothing more. His shows aren’t about anything other than propaganda and sensationalism.

  4. He’s giving his audience exactly what they’re tuning in for. These are members of the Church of the Sub-Moron. And luckily for Rush, that makes up about 43% of the US population.

  5. Bruce makes a good point: Rush is disingenuous but he has made a fortune preaching to his choir. They lap it up.

  6. Well over 70% of Hispanics are Catholic. Pope Francis is from Argentina. As the GOP has been unable to attract the Hispanic voter (27% voted for Romney), loudmouths like Limbaugh will only reinforce the continuing trend of Hispanic voters moving away from the GOP. And the number of Hispanic voters will increase over the next decade. Maybe Rush should change his theme song to Beck’s Loser. Soy un perdedor.

  7. Most of the commenters on this don’t seem to know much about Europe’s horrific totalitarian history and it’s politically corrupt Catholic Church dating back to the Crusades. Martin Luther’s story is a good example. I always loved the story about Lucifer telling Jesus he would make him ruler over the entire world if he would bow down to Lucifer. Sounds like an offer from the mafia doesn’t it? Well Jesus refused and you know the rest of the story. He had a more important job to complete.
