Jim Tressel, who led Ohio State to its first title in 34 years, resigned Monday amid NCAA violations and mounting revelations that sullied the image of one of the nation’s top football programs.
“After meeting with university officials, we agreed that it is in the best interest of Ohio State that I resign as head football coach,” Tressel said in a statement released by the university. “The appreciation that (wife) Ellen and I have for the Buckeye Nation is immeasurable.”
As one reader on SF Gate put it: “Tressel never smiled. He is in the entertainment business and took it so seriously that he never smiled. That is the portrait of a win at any price coach.”
