Baseball and grilled ribs from BriarPatch/Cal Organics

“It’s beautiful day for a ball game”: Warm weather, the Dodger-Giants opener and a barbecue.

For this milestone day, my barbecue is going include ribs from Chico-based Llano Seco Ranch (go to BriarPatch or Cal Organics) and grilled fresh asparagus on the “Big Green Egg,” and a local red wine. Once you try organic pork, it’s hard to go back. You can really taste the difference.

The “Big Green Egg” is one of the best smokers and grills. It’s derived from an ancient clay cooker called a “kamodo.” We’ve had ours for a decade. I know some other locals who enjoy them regularly.

Grilling is not just a “man’s” work. A recipe from “Grill Grrrl — Adventures of a girl on a grill” is here. I just use fresh cracked pepper and a little salt, however. Play ball!

  1. Good question. They’re actually just the regular spare rib cut but very lean and flavorful. I’m going to cook ’em “low and slow” starting about 3 p.m. Game time is 5 p.m.

  2. Baseball! Being a Cubs fan, thanks for the Harry Carey video. I’m fortunate to have Extra Innings on DirecTV so I get to watch the Cubs and Sox and my husband can watch his Padres. There is only a conflict when one of our teams plays the other. When push comes to shove, I’m cheering for the Cubs.

    On another note, being a fan of the lovable losers, I have a lot of empathy for the Kings fans right now. Those folks are awesome and have stuck with the team through good times and bad. I admired them so much and had such an understanding of their loyalty, that I started to cheer the Kings on, too. Kings fans and Cubs fans have a lot in common, though the possibility of the Cubs ever leaving Chicago is infinitely small. If they ever wanted to leave I have a feeling da Mayor would put up road blocks and the good people of Chicago would form human chains at the border!

  3. Thanks Gail. The Cubbies are very special to me too. Many good memories of the games when I lived in Chicago, including Harry singing “Take me out to the ball game.” The fans have a unique (and patient) relationship with the team.

      Being a native Chicagoan, I’m a 3rd generation Cubs fan. The first was my grandpa, who was a Chicago fireman, followed by my mom and then me. When my son (the 4th generation) turned 30 we celebrated at Wrigley and surprised him with his name on the lighted sign under under the scoreboard. As far as patient goes, there’s always next year. The Cubs opener is tomorrow. I can’t wait!

  4. My first experience with a Kamodo pot was helping my college roommate unload his “hand me down K-pot” from the back of his Mazda truck. I was skeptical…very skeptical – but we had a party with plenty of beer(duh!) and a few London broils on the Kamodo pot. It was a huge success. I ran into one again when I meet my then future father-in-law in the late 90’s. He had a Kamodo pot he shipped back from his days working for IBM in Tokyo – He swore by it, and it cooked a whole chicken to perfection. My wife and I received a “Green Egg” as a wedding gift from her siblings. I use it weekly – the best darn cooker/smoker/bbq in the world. I cook just about everything/anything on it. BTW – I cook my ribs at 200(the green egg has two air adjustments for temp regulation) for 5 hours. Sauce for the final 30 minutes and then let them rest and relax for 30-45 minutes – Heaven! I buy my charcoal at A to Z on Ridge Road – “Cowboy” is the brand – it burns perfectly and their price is good too.

  5. BGE is the only way to smoke!! Other lump charcoal options are Wicked Good. top notch lump when you are doing those low and slow cooks. You can get it down at the Beam “Easy Living” Center (422 Henderson Street) where they also carry the Egg and provide Northern California’s best Egg prices. They have a Kansas City Bar B Que Society Certified judge on staff and are the BBQ authority when it comes to the foothills.
