Ten months after coming to Congress, Tom McClintock has emerged as one of its most outspoken and most “consistently reliable” conservatives, the Sac Bee reports in a profile this weekend. The article is here.
He is California’s top federal fundraiser, collecting more than $838,000 in the first three quarters of this year.
“And with so much money in the bank, no Democrats have announced plans to oppose his re-election in 2010,” as the Bee reports, including Charlie Brown.
McClintock’s district is a “Solid R,” as in solidly Republican, according to the Washington-based Cook Political Report.
In the article, a spokesman for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee called McClintock “a true embodiment of the Republican just-say-no mantra.” Other political handicappers say his seat is not “in play” in 2010, adding that Democrats are targeting other districts.
The article fails to mention McClintock’s narrow win against Brown. How well he does in 2010 depends on the opposition. I know die-hard GOP’s who like Tom but Democrats and independents who won’t vote until “hell freezes over.”
The “just-say-no” mantra does not resonate with them. Tom has been spending considerable time in our county, where he lost to Brown. The other day I saw his “field lieutenant” visiting the “sustainability center” in Nevada City with the city manager.
