Supe(s) invite “Defend Rural America” proponent to speak @ tomorrow’s BOS meeting

The “Constitutional Sheriff” mindset and drumbeat is continuing in our county — apparently unabated. First our Sheriff. Now this. Calling Doyel Shamley a “natural resources consultant” is rather misleading, don’t you think? Does this reflect the values of the majority in our county? Watch the video:

  1. Apache County, AZ, as far as I can tell is mostly desert, and not much like Nevada County at all in terms of forest management. The population is also pretty different, since most of the County is in the Navajo Nation. I don’t quite know what lessons Ed Scofield thinks are applicable to Nevada County which to me looks like a very different place. But maybe I’m missing something?

  2. The Board of Dopes (you guys are earning this name) do it again. What is a racist, doomsday prepper going to add to the conversation in Nevada County?

    • I must apologize, for this is much to broad a statement. There were three Supervisors (Anderson, Beeson, Lamphier) with a more enlightened/educated/common sense view of our own county, than to allow this to go forward.

  3. Here come the black helicopters. Just what we need, another whack job to stir up the mindless morons on the right even more.

  4. Maybe Mr. Scofield and the BOS will move to Apache County, AZ, thereby saving the forested environs of Nevada County from the emo scared guys. Believe me I’ve seen whackier things this election cycle…

  5. What exactly is Doyel Shamley proposing with a county claiming “jurisdictional authority” on public (Federal) land? Is the portion of the Tahoe NF that is inside Nevada County going to be a NFMA or NEPA free timber harvest zone? Are the BOS going to plan, review or approve timber sales or fuel reduction projects?

I am just amazed that a person who could get elected to a county office take seriously a wingnut like Shamley, what a hoot! Nazi Germany film clips; seriously? Maybe he should have included footage of the battle of Stalingrad or Kursk, just for effects.

The CABRO sponsored Doyel Shamley apocalypse road show starts at 1:30 tomorrow. This could be good for some laughs.

    • Steve is right. This video is outrageous. So many logical fallicies, I don’t think one could respond. The video clips playing behind his speech is at best, sophomoric. What’s the point of this guy speaking?

And, I thought the educational system wasted money…….

  6. I’m wondering now what the Navajo Nation think of this wind bag? That’s where Apache County sits. When he starts talking about chopping down ANY tree’s on a reservation, (let alone a National Park) makes me assured that Doyel hasn’t really thought this through!

  7. The fact that Supervisor Ed Scofield would want to include this crazy outlandish Shamley, the guy is a righwing nut job, as part of a BOS meeting, tells me that “local control” in Nevada County of Federal Lands needs to be seriously opposed. CABRO and Ed Scofield are not fit to run the dog kennel. Local control over Federal Land will only result in the local good ol boys having their way to line their own pockets. Its another attempt at a natural resource grab first started many years ago. The old Sagebrush Rebellion during the Reagan years comes to mind. The environmental community has seen this before, and it will keep happening. So I hope all the young grad students in the various environmental and biological sciences, who may be doing internships at local nonprofits, are payying attention. This is the same old crap we dealt with all the while trying to slow or stop the rape and pillage of what was left of ancient forests and, oh by the way, get lands in Wilderness protection. Not many of today’s generation of young people have any idea of the struggles during the 60s, 70s, 80s to get land protected back then that is enjoyed today because of hard work done by people who put everything they had into fighting against the forces of greed. Many may be under the delusion that the Forest Service protected those Wilderness Areas, when infact, the Forest Service fought every attempt at lands getting Wilderness designation.

  8. BTW, been out all day, but this “natural resources consultant” also will sell you a custom gun.

He provides some “documents” here too that are worth a look:

One labeled “How to fix socialism” is here:

You can’t make this stuff up! All from a “natural resources consultant.”

    • In here, Shamely reveals that he is so far right wing, he calls Mc
Cain (his Senator) a Manchurian candidate, and if you believe him (McCain) your drinking “the kool-aid”.
Hope to make the meeting today. It will be something to see “some” of our elected officials make total fools of themselves, in person. Again.
I sincerely hope that there will be a few Sups (Lamphier, Beeson) who will point out this new low in Nevada County political grandstanding by these representatives of the extreme right. Is Scofield about to run for some other office? Lining up spotlight news (wanna see the headlines for tomorrows Union?) along the way for his radical base, so they can see he is one of them?

  9. I went to the BOS meeting today. Mr. Shamley talked for 2hrs and 15 minutes. It took all that time for the meeting to hear what he had to say.
The meeting was attended by 95% Cabpro/Anti government/OathKeepers/tea bags anti-regulation propnents.
There was no one (other than two people from the audience) to give an opposing or contrasting point of view for the Board to hear about the state of our Tahoe Forest.
Supervisor Anderson put it best when he stated that after listening to what Shamely said for over 2 hours he didn’t understand a single thing.
Supervisor Beeson let everyone know that the Legal Council of the County (Apache), where this guy is from, has advised them that the Apache council not try and take any Federal Land or do what Shamely advises them to do.
The Cabpro audience all were nodding their collective heads to the beat of “ant govenrment, take federal land” thats in your county, and it will solve not only unemployment but juvenile deliquency. One after the other urging the BOS to “take up the cause”.
What a monumental waste of time. The tail tried to wag the dog today, I hope the Sups dont buy a single, solitary word of it-

  10. Chip,
Thanks for the update. Glad there aren’t more pressing issues in our county for the Supes to tackle for 21/2 hours on a Tuesday afternoon than entertaining our hard-right activists! Truth is stranger than fiction.

  11. Yeah, Richard does have a pretty good sense of humor. We consider it a blessing when we eastern County rationalists must spend a few hours exposed to the grassy knoll of the western county.

    • It’s all you can do: show a sense of humor. I wonder if district-wide elections would help. Anything, please. This is so counterproductive.

BTW, the CABPRO Facebook page has only 38 “likes.” In a 2 1/2 hour meeting, that’s devoting almost four minutes of BOS meeting time for each and every person who “liked” the CABPRO Facebook page. Now that’s customer service from government!

  12. I highly recommend reading Liz Kellar’s article. She explains some of Shamley’s main points, and what the CABRO director said. I couldn’t help but see Shamley, if he was around in the mid 1930s, as a guy who would try selling rain making to Dust Bowl era Oklahomans. He is a road show huckster.

Chuck Shea urged the Board to consider passing an emergency resolution to allow the county to establish jurisdictional authority and open up Federal land to private enterprise. (That is called a land grab, GOOD LUCK!)

I saw Terry Lamphier at the store last night. I’ve only seen him once when he was doing door-to-door campaigning, but he remembered my name from commenting at the meeting. So I had a chance to explain one on one what I wanted to point out. That is, in Nevada County we have a very serious problem with fire danger on private lands right around here. The BOS should focus with doing what they can to help or encourage private land owners with fuel reduction projects in these highly developed areas. I mentioned at the meeting we’ve been driving around looking at houses, I can’t believe how badly some of these developed areas are with what looks like to me as a free-for-all parcel splits and slap up construction in total fire traps. I can’t believe the county approved that crap. And some of the roads in those areas, I would hate to think what an emergency evacuation would look like all the while with fire fighting equipment trying to get in. Focus on those areas.

I also mentioned to Terry that the county starts messing with NF land and trying to go around NEPA and NFMA, he will see an enviromental community come out of the wood work. I don’t think the county attorneys wants to start having to deal with Earthjustice or NRDC.

BTW, I’m thinking about making some maps and give them to the BOS. I want to do a density map of parcels with improvement values, show where in Western Nevada County the highest development is. Overlay some Cal Fire data with fire risk or fire severity. I don’t think it will be hard to show the BOS where the real problems are around here.

    • Steve, if you can make it to our biomass task force presentation to the Board of Supervisors March 26 (1:30 pm), some of your proposed work may have already been done.
Included will be a very compelling power point from Malcolm North, UC Davis, that clearly shows nexus of good forest management, wildfire danger and importance of altering slash usage for power.
Also will have a report on current local biomass task force status/projects and update from fire safety folks.
Should be a good, informative presentation. Very timely with historical drought unfolding in our mountains…

      • Thanks Terry, I’ve marked the date. I just got handed several projects today but sometime during the next few weeks don’t be surprised if some maps show up at your office. There is nothing new about the CalFire data, I’m sure you and the other supervisors have seen that. I’m curious about development density and value in high fire risk/severity areas around the local area. For me, this is the fun stuff.

    • Re: “passing an emergency resolution to allow the county to establish jurisdictional authority and open up Federal land to private enterprise” – why is it an “emergency”?

It would be smart to take control of NF lands in order to reduce fuel loads if the Fed is not going to do anything about it.

Does the county also have jurisdictional authority to reduce fuel loads on unimproved, rural, private property?

  13. As Sheriff is an elected post how did Sheriff Royal get elected? Improper vetting? Too many morons, throwbacks and troglodytes in the electorate? Masochism and self loathing of the constituents? I’m dumbfounded.

    • I don’t think anyone ever runs against him, Bruce.

    • From what I have seen lately, the sheriff is on board with all these people that were at the BOS on Tuesday. He has let us know he is a gun rights advocate so much so that he is giving out concealed weapons permits to everyone who wants one, his ties to these Oath Keepers, Tea Party Conspiracy theorists, and now the coo coo’s that want to disregard the Fed and take back National Parks because they happen to be in your county, are very, very disturbing. He is part of the problem, not the solution. Royal was a cheerleader on Tuesday for these people. And, as an aside, what I saw of these groups, that were there on Tuesday, is that they are trying to take democracy over in this town. Thank the stars that we have a few Sups who havent taken the “Troglodyte Trolly” to Tin Foil Hat-ville. But this guy Scofield and his “buddies” needs to be watched, closely.
By the way, Scofield said that he attended a meeting where he met this nut Shamely, and was so impressed he decided to invite him and his “plan” to address us?. Wonder what meeting that was? And was he there representing Nevada City in his capacity as a Supervisor? if so, we need a leash and a muzzle on him, because he has overstepped his authority.

  14. Excellent Brad! What could go wrong, just get er done.
