What a mudpit

Check out the comment thread here. Moral: Don’t lose control of your blog to the sickos. And don’t participate when they show up.

  1. Can I get my 15 minutes back? (No aspersion on Steve)

    • LOL!

    • For the record Bruce, RL removed some of the comments that were getting off track (mine included). Good on RL.

But the bigger issue really is that this conversation on RL’s site about the local Nevada County economy–and how we plan together to move forward–denigrated into an unnecessary focus on the SBC, global warming, and who has the fanciest CV.

These kinds of distractions are not helpful.

      • RL removed the comments because I called him out on that here. The “distractions” you refer to lead to libel lawsuits — and they should. Sadly, there are some real sickos in our community (who give the blogosphere a bad name). Not moderating the comments is a problem too. Worse, is editing them out, without any dialog about why.

  2. Yep,

Bob certainly does have his hands full over there.
Everyone on his blog has a good point, and I mean everyone.
Yet, who among them has a proven track record of business success and financial prosperity? Where’s the gravitas?
That’s the guy I want to listen to.
Until then I have better things to think about.

Hey, am I the only one who thinks Denzel is getting shafted in the awards department this year?
If you have not seen “Flight” you are missing the most amazing acting of his career, IMHO.
I know, I know, he already has an Oscar for “Training Day”. So does that mean only white actors like Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks get to double down on the golden statuette?
The last big Oscar rip-off came when Bill Murray’s ground breaking performance in, “Lost in Translation”, was passed over for Sean Penn’s scream-fest in the abysmal, “Mystic River”.
    Where’s the justice?

  3. No, Jeffy, I didn’t delete the comments to please you. I didn’t see them until an hour ago, because I actually have other things to do than look at blogs all day long.

  4. Well said Judith. I’m looking forward to seeing your exhibit in Roseville this week (though I will be passing on the “carbon footprint” bill to you and yours)!

  5. Come on gentlemen.
Rent “Flight” and please get back to what is important, Oscar conspiracy!

    • Thanks Judith, we will rent “Flight” asap. I was compelled by the story I read in the various mixed reviews, but just haven’t gotten around to it yet.

We just recently viewed on Roku “Lost in Translation” and were completely absorbed. I had read a review in the New Yorker when it first came out, but hadn’t heard much else. Wow, what a movie.

  6. Didn’t you love the scene with the beautiful Japanese escort doing everything she could to fulfill her evening’s contract?
That chick should have gotten her own Oscar, in its own category.
“Lip my stocking, Lip it! Lip it!”
    And then the fake orgasm.
    She was awesome.

    • Oh and, “We are Sausalito.”
      Priceless!

    • That scene was disturbing. As was much of the movie, for that matter. I have never been to Tokyo and this movie made me not want to go there any time soon. (I know, the countryside is beautiful…maybe in my next lifetime.) One of the things I really like about the Internets is that I can get a pretty good idea of what things are like w/o having to personally experience them. Very efficient, especially when those things don’t resonate for me. Murray and Johansson’s reactions to the hyper and overly-lit Tokyo skyscrape were perfectly in tune with how I would react to that silliness. The only part of the movie that wasn’t honest to me was when Murray slept with the washed-up lounge singer–his behavior during those scenes seemed a bit out of character.

      • Michael,

Isn’t it interesting that two people can see the same film and experience it so differently?

You saw a washed up lounge singer and I saw a stunning redhead with a nice voice. And as for Murray’s character sleeping with her? When the cat is away, he will play. Lots of married men have sexual encounters on the road and don’t think of it as infidelity so much as compensation. Go figure.

I suppose having lived in Japan I hold a different perspective toward its people and customs. I laughed all the way through the escort scene because I understand Japanese people. I also found it sort of touching in a way, because I have also known a few prostitutes and I think I understand their approach to their work. Mainly charitable.

      • Yes, I’m beginning to wonder if we saw the same movie! (-;

I was with you on the “stunning redhead” impression until the bedroom scene and then her baggage started to come out…yikes!

For me, the movie was about a middle-aged man commiserating with a twenty-something young woman about their marriages. How they each felt about their own marriages, and then marriage in general, was revealed not just by their words but by facial expressions, body language, and proximity. Murray and Johansson were both brilliant, and the film deserved more than just the Best Original Screenplay Oscar.

  7. Jeeze, see what happens when you only get the chance to look at these blogs occasionally?

You miss all of the mud throwing! Maybe I should set up my phone so I can get in on all of the fun (but then again, maybe not!!!!!)…..

    LOL!!!!
