It will be exciting to check out this website when it launches, which I hear is imminent.

  1. Nice image Jeff, but it appears to be an altered photo, not a true painting.

The seating area, as I refer to it, (I used to live in Santa Cruz, so I cannot really see it as an actual boardwalk) has been the subject of much controversy in our town. Should it go? Should it stay? Some folks are downright passionate about it.

It does narrow Commercial street, making if difficult for vehicules to pass, especially when big delivery trucks block the corner of Spring and Commercial. In other words, the structure complicates traffic. Something we try to avoid, right?

Now, if that portion of the street were closed to vehicular traffic entirely, trees could be planted, cobblestones laid and a true plaza could be set up. That would indicate more of a commitment to a walking city. A cool shady plaza, just down from the Courthouse would be very attractive in warmer months and might draw a more diverse crowd than it does presently.
As it is, the bench area is something of a half-shot, not really a serious nuisance, but not quite right either.

  2. Judith, this is a painting by Lisa Redfern. She has kindly given us permission to use her artwork.

Also, the Boardwalk is in the area that three parked cars use to utilize so there is the exact same amount of room as there was before the Boardwalk was installed. This has had no different impact on the traffic. It has always been congested there.

Lastly, while I like the idea of taking a bold step and closing a street, this town would not support this idea until further studies were conducted. The Boardwalk is a small step in testing this out. Hence, a test pilot.

  3. Thank you Reinette,

Just my opinion among a lot of opinions about the benches. No one can say the project hasn’t been controversial for the community. I’d say even say divisive.

I figure we’re all so stressed out, we didn’t need more. I just don’t see it as a priority for NC. But then again, I don’t run things around here right?

I’d love it, a Monarchy, “Empress Judith”, Dues Ex Machina, smooth sailing all the way to Prosperity and Peace under her loving and capable hand.
Alas, it is only a fantasy. I am a peon artist, and I must now get back to my easel.

    Oh and, it’s a photo.
    Nice work too.

I am a painter and a photographer, so it probably easier for me to perceive the difference.

  4. Interestingly enough, Judith, the Boardwalk survey that was conducted just a few months ago had overwhelming support in keeping the Boardwalk going(24 in favor, 4 opposed). I believe Mayor Duane Strawser got similar results when asking about Boardwalk feedback as well. And thanks for Lisa’s website. Though, I’m not sure I follow the point you are trying to make about Lisa’s work. Altered photo, painting, etc., I think anyone looking at the piece knows this is not an actual photograph.

  5. This website is now “live.” I hope everybody goes there to gather information about this project. Thanks Reinette.

  6. Of course it’s an “altered photo”. It’s obvious.

  7. I accessed the boardwalk website and I guess I am a little confused about some of the content. Is it a case of revisionist history or am I thinking of the wrong place. Are they talking about the historic plaza where Broad, Sacramento, Boulder and Main came together when they say the town square was lost in 1969? If so, it did not happen in 1969 it happened in the early 1960′s. The buildings were torn down and that section of the freeway was dedicated on Oct 20, 1967. Was there ever a “town square”? There has never been one shown on all the historic pictures and maps of Nevada City. There was nothing to be taken out in 1969. Need to do a little more research, Currently the website is historically inaccurate as the boardwalk itself.

    • Steve,

I cannot understand how a town that defines itself as “Historic”, has no real clue about its history.
I remember passing through Nevada City on the way to Susanville, my hometown. There was never a plaza, only what folks called “the bottom of town”.
That said, Nevada City does suffer from a lack of a true plaza like the ones Chico, Paso Robles and Arcata have, for instance. But the town was erected hastily, with little planning, so it was never built in the first place, or it would be located at the corner of Broad and Pine in the middle of the city. I think it would look great if it were there, and could happen if this were a walking city, but it isn’t and probably never will be in our lifetimes.

Getting back to citing history as a way to influence decisions, I have issues with the way the same argument was made about erecting that ridiculous thing at the entrance to the city.

As a woman of CA Native heritage I am offended by that structure which some of us, who know what it is, refer to as the “Termite Tipi”, the “Cone” or lately, “Tintle’s Folly”. It is an insulting cultural misrepresentation.
Why would anybody convince that good man, who has only helped the community, to make such a serious mistake?
Here’s why it is a mistake, he cannot remove it. For all his property, power and good works, he is bound to leave that abomination standing.
Likewise, Nevada City cannot order its removal, nor the County.
Our community is stuck with that embarrassing monument to ignorance and hubris.
I hardly know how to explain it to my friends and colleagues who are knowledgable about the Nisenan.
There is a lesson to be drawn from this thing which cannot be undone, and I hope someone is paying attention.
