Manipulating the small-town newspapers during elections

Editor’s note: This happens on all sides, but here’s an email I received this morning. How many of The Union’s “sincere” letters to the editor about candidates are a “self motivated” process vs. “planted” by the campaign team? Heck, it’s cheaper than buying a campaign ad.

“We hear personal experiences from you daily and want to encourage you to share those stories in the News!” according to an email I received from Brian Dahle’s campaign.

“Let’s keep the positive reaction rolling by sending all personal stories and experiences you’ve had with Brian to your local news source(s).

“Brian won’t just be a name to voters in your area, but an experience by someone in their own community!

  1. Republicans have made lying such a virtue I doubt that personal stories about any Republican in their bahalf would be true. I recall the shills in McClintock’s town hall at GV Vets a few years back giving false testimony about health care in other countries. The news papers listed would refuse to print “negative” testimony. The truth and good reporting is being burried under ground.
Mark Twain said, “A lie will travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on it’s shoes.”
Not only is lying a virte with Republicans, the general public prefers it over the truth.

  2. That’s an improvement over the old days, when candidates would give their supporters form letters to copy in their own hand and send to the local paper.

Is there really a paper in Susanville called “Stuff?” That’s a good description of what move newspapers up here in the boondocks publish.
