Robo-call from Tom McClintock could have cost Dahle a vote

I was headed out the door with our son for a orthodontist appointment, and the phone rang, slowing me down.

It was a robo-call from Tom McClintock asking me to vote for Brian Dahle.

Poor fellow. He might have cost Brian one vote. These “robo-call” people have got to “dig deeper” when targeting their audiences.

LOL!

  1. Next up – John Doolittle will be calling for Bosetti.

  2. I received the same robocall.

  3. Doubtful about Doolittle jumping in. But it does shine a light on the Democrats inability to line up any qualified candidates for these posts in our district. It makes me proud to be a “decline to state.” ;) Brian signing the Grover Norquist “no tax pledge” was illuminating.

    • Yes…tongue in cheek about Doolittle. I see an “under vote” for Assembly in your precinct. The “under votes” will be a interesting(and I bet large) data in the post Prop 14 California.

      • Look for undervotes in Moderate-to-Democratic districts throughout the region. A nice man but solid red in “conservationist” clothing. Clever.

    • The fact the Bosetti didn’t show up to the two forums I went to and Dahle was a reasonable candidate makes my decision easy. I don’t agree with Dahle on many core issues but I feel he will represent our district with best intentions. Since Bosetti was a no show I can only assume that is how he will represent and govern as well.

      • Ben,
Bosetti did not start showing up until after the primary, after he got his clocked cleaned here in Nevada County. He didn’t think he needed our votes down here I guess. But with Dahle winning by 6 points after the primary here, I guess he decided to start coming around. Has anyone noticed that all the campaign signs have been taken down at the Alta Sierra intersection except for Rick Bosetti’s? I saw that yesterday when I was driving down to Auburn for work. weird.

  4. “Best intentions.” Keep us posted. I wonder if Brian ever voted for a Democrat or Green. Central Valley politics (and we have been dragged into that region) is a hoot.

    • You must remember that Brian Dahle is also endorsed by Robert Meacher – a Democrat supervisor from Plumas.

      • Robert would have been my pick for assembly if we didn’t have prop 14.

      • The “D’s who support Dahle have shown a willingness to “cross the aisle,” including Meacher. That’s nice. I remain skeptical whether it’s a two-way street, however. One telling clue was how the hard-right “R’s” quickly vilified Jim Firth (a GV City Council Candidate) for merely stating that both Dahle and Bosetti signed the Grover Norquist “no-tax” pledge. It was a cogent point, raised by the Sac Bee, moderate GOPers and others. Now Tom McClintock is “phoning” our houses asking us to vote for Brian. The real question is how many of the “R”s that support Dahle would/or have ever “crossed the aisle” to vote for a “D.” I mean, come on. Let’s hope there will be some points of agreement on conservation, water rights and some “nonpartisan” issues.

    • Jeff,
Prop 14 has created this situation. I would guess in the bay area there are two dems on the ballot. The state of Washington has the same top two primary system and has found it doesn’t solve the partisan or incumbency problem.

      • I voted for David McKay when we lived in Nevada City a long time ago, and if I lived in Grass Valley I would vote for Lisa Swarthout and Howard Levine. So I know I have crossed over in the past and I think you have to look at more than just an R or a D but who is best for the job. I am glad McClintock and Bob Meacher, are both supporting Brian Dahle, that shows that he has done a good job working with everyone.

  5. I just took a quick look at the 80 assembly races next week;
    61 are D vs R
    11 are R vs R
    7 are D vs D
    1 are D vs Ind

I will follow up after election day on the under votes in the 18 non D vs R races.

    • Then we should follow up on the voting records of the winners!

    • LA & Ess Eff will continue to keep the Calif. Assembly in the hands of the D’s(currently 2/3 +/-). I liked prop 14 because I thought it would give voters at least a “bud” vs “bud light” choice in the general election in districts that have been traditionally D or R. I think the last time Nevada County had a “D” assemblyman was in the 60′s. Lon Hatimaya was supposed to give Bernie Richter a run in the 90′s, but he fell way short. The NY Times story pointed out the desire for change.

      • Mark,
Now we got conservative vs super conservative just as I imagine some strong democratic districts have liberal vs super liberal candidates. It is great for those who identify with the party in control. In 2014 voter turnout will be even more anemic than normal if we have two of the same party to choose from in the general election. Instant Run Off Voting is the answer.

      • I was hoping that Bosetti v. Dahle was a “Bud” vs. “Bud light” choice. I heard Brian speak, though. It’s more like a comparison of Stout beers, not Buds. Still hoping for “across the aisle” agreement on some issues, though.

  6. FYI – Nevada County’s Assembly Representatives:

    Representative Party Dates
    John H. O’Donnell Democratic 1932–1940
    Lloyd W. Lowrey Democratic 1940–1962
    Leroy F. Greene Democratic 1962–1974
    Eugene A. Chappie Republican 1974–1980
    Wally Herger Republican 1980–1986
    Chris Chandler Republican 1986–1992
    Bernie Richter Republican 1993–1999
    Sam Aanestad Republican 1999–2002
    Rick Keene Republican 2002–2008
Daniel Logue Republican 2008 – present

  7. The fact is a R will be representing us in Sac. I worked with Brian when I was on the Nevada County BOS. He will do right on our core rural issues. The other stuff will be a crap shoot. Hard choice but the reality is not easy either.

  8. The robo-call may cost Dahle your vote, but that’s nothing compared to what an Emery endorsement will cost him. But Emery’s reasoning validates something I’ve noticed since I moved here: Just showing up is good enough.

  9. Kim,

With all due respect, those are City Council seats. People “cross over” all the time (often without even knowing it); in those races, many people don’t know whether the person is an “R” or a “D.”

I’m talking about state and national elections. For example, as I’ve said here before, I voted for Ronald Reagan but also Bill Clinton. And you?

You see, “DTS” voters like me are more pragmatic than riveted to ideology. After all, the core beliefs of most Americans (including me) are center-left or center-right, not extremist.

As with business, you have be flexible in your thinking to handle whatever situation is thrown at you.

In fact, this hurricane has thrown a real monkey wrench into the anti-government extremists. Many of the same people who vilify government are now running to it for help.

    • And how about the collaboration between Gov. Christie and Pres. Obama during this hurricane? Each one praising the other for their actions, putting politics aside. It can be done.

    • Jeff,

I voted for Ross Perot back in the day because I didn’t like either party at the time and Perot seemed to not be part of the establishment, so over the years in National elections I have not always gone the direction of the GOP. Jeff, conservatives are not all total anti-government, as you state. We are for a smaller more efficient government that has limited power, like the constitution states and what our founders intended. Of course in national emergencies and situations that require government help, we are not opposed to this, as long as it is done in a transparent and efficient manner. I give to organizations like the Red Cross, who in times like these do a terrific job and step up to help. A few years ago I chaired a local Red Cross event that raised $15,000 dollars for the Red Cross here in our region because they are a worthy organization who I feel does a great job and they help a lot of folks. In fact if anyone wants to donate to the relief effort back east the Red Cross could use help. You can text them and it automaticly donates $10.00. I think they raised several millions in the past few days by everyone just sending the text.
