Like America itself, the S.F. Giants are a “melting pot” of talent and multi-culturalism. Pablo Sandoval hit three home runs! Barry Zito not only tamed but shut down the Tigers! He’s 2-0 post-season. It’s 8-1 at the top of the 8th, and I consider Game #1 of the World Series “Game Over.”
The Nevada City power outage (impacting 3,200 homes) sent us to Northridge Restaurant for the start of the game, where a generator was humming. (Our son worked on his homework in the booth, and we ate dinner). But the power is back on, and we’re home now.
We’re going to bed after the last out an inning from now (not to the PC), sleeping soundly and knowing that the Giants are America’s team (not the Dallas Cowboys, for goodness sake)!

Buh-Zing!!
Hey Jeff,
I’d like to address these following San Francisco Values (SFV) [we live out by the Willow and had no power outage, thank god, so were able to watch the game in full. The highlights are thus]:
* The Barry/Timmy show is one of the most compelling starting rotation combos that major league baseball has ever seen in the post-season–this is Bochy’s doing. One Cy Young Award winner after another. The Giant Bochy Brain makes it happen
* Verlander pitched 98 pitches by the end of the fourth. This was due to the Giants batters fouling off about a zillion pitches. This is how you rattle the best pitcher in the major leagues
* Buster Posey, who will soon be named the National League MVP, made a crucial double play as catcher by grabbing a ball that was clearly going foul, tagging the batter before he had a chance to do anything, and then throwing to 2nd base so that Marco Scutaro could apply the second tag out
* Panda w/ 3 homers — ’nuff said. But maybe not; Marty Lurie describes Sandoval’s achievement tonight as one of the greatest moments in all of World Series history
* Baseball is about pushing your opponent to make mistakes. And when you are on top, the baseball gods also make sure the plays go your way. In the bottom of the third, Angel Pagan hit a high chopper to third base, but then it hit the third base bag and caromed into left field, and Pagan was safe at 2nd w/ a double. Marco Scutaro subsequently hit a single to score Pagan, and that was when the Giants were off to the races
* It appeared as if the Tigers were afraid that the skies would open up once again, raining down upon them a world of west-coast miasma, as if they had seen a video beforehand, that pre-ordained that they would lose…pitiful
I do not underestimate these Tigers. However, they now know what they are up against.
Michael A.
Good stuff. Tks.
And Game 2? I don’t even know what to write anymore. The Fielder tag-out and the Most Incredible Bunt In The World is just too epic for flowery words. Game 3 starts in less than 18 hours. Go Giants!!
Both are tough teams but the one with those San Francisco Values did not play so “conservatively”.
Without Verlander on the field the Tigers may be better. Giant fans should become Kate Upton fans. She’s got Jason off his game?
Jeff: Please! Do not call the Giants “America’s Team”. You have no idea how deep and enduring the hate for Dallas goes in Nevada City.
Everything is done in pure sarcasm here.
I was surprised to see the US flag on top of the flagpole and hearing the national anthem before the game in San Francisco if we went by the description of hard right wing radio, local blogs, and FOX. We would have thought the gay pride rainbow flag would have been atop and the pregame song would have been internationale anthem.
It was nice to see the Giants come out with a strong performance in the first game. If they can hold on tonight and split in Detroit we will be in a great position in game five. After years (70′s- 94′) of living, eating, and breathing a struggling SF team it is nice to see them bring back the historical winning tradition. The Giant franchise has a pretty impressive history. I started watching games again in the last couple years with my dad who just turned 80 this month. Spending good time with my dad overrides my boycott of the league. He signed with the Pirates in the 50′s but lost his window when he had to go to Korea.
Really Ben, do you really want us to believe that your father served in Korea? and sacrificed a life dream for his country? We all know that is just a liberal fantasy. The only people who ever sacrificed for our country are conservative families!
Madison Bumgarner! Giants up 2-0!
One more day of San Francisco values like this and we’re gonna be doin’ ticker tape on Market Street in a week or so. The Giant Bochey Brain continues to dominate the World Series, Hector Sanchez notwithstanding.
