TheUnion.com’s front-door slide show reads like a TV crime program, not a community newspaper

We have a lot to celebrate in community, and I was hoping the redesigned website of The Union (behind a “paywall”) would show it off with an interesting slideshow — promoting a half-dozen or so images. Instead, it looks like a TV crime show on Fox. Sure, we have crime and arrests, but we also have a lot more going on. What do would-be visitors think? Gadzooks!

Here’s what the slideshow showed this morning (all “commodity” news, by the way) — a bunch of “mug shots”:

•”Bobby of Nevada City in crash that sent man to hospital”
•”Suspected car burglar Brandon arrested twice on same day”
•”Brandon of Grass Valley arrested after alleged knife attack”
•”Police find fire, chaos at spa where 7 shot”

  1. What a motley crew! Isn’t this the same assembly of characters I see walking down to Pioneer Parkeach day? Not to worry…our local government is in full charge

    • I have to wonder why the Union’s group is not doing articles on more than just this one-sided approach to a multi-faceted community.

I used to enjoy the articles on alternative buildings, and things like what’s being done to attract businesses into our hamlet.

The jobs issue is one reason why we have the 4 stooges continually playing, so what’s our counties management (BOS) doing to improve this?

Heck, the BOS spent several millions in the fighting of the pot crowd, so I wonder if this money was not better spent trying to attract businesses to relocate here?

  2. We paint ourselves as a bunch of losers to visitors to our community newspaper’s website, because of laziness in presenting creative images, rather than “handouts” from the Sheriff’s Office. Good going The Union!

  3. I’m glad The Union is providing some coverage of the large increase in crime western Nevada County has been experiencing and I think that’s a good thing. This community needs to see and understand what has been happening around here over the last couple of years. It’s time for a frank community discussion about this. The community needs to be part of the solution and getting information out about this is needed and useful.

The majority of this is a direct result or closely related to drugs and a massive drug culture and drug economy we have here. Meth and the illegal resale and use of prescription drugs and alcohol abuse are rampant here.

As the police and arrest reports and stories also show we have seen a very disturbing increase in violence connected to and part of the drug and drug related crimes. Violent, drug related home invasions are not uncommon here now. And most disturbing is the young ages of many involved in the increase in crimes here.

Here’s the link to the Nevada County jail daily booking log. Take some time to review a few weeks worth of arrest bookings and see how many 20 some-things are arrested and what they are arrested for. It’s very disturbing to see the data on this issue:

    http://prdrpt2.nevcounty.net/sheriff/rdPage.aspx?rdReport=JailMediaReport&dtInmateInformation-PageNr=1&rdNoShowWait=True

So far today (10/23) two 19 year olds have been booked at the jail, both for drug offenses. Reviewing the past month of jail bookings also shows how many are also arrested for violation of probation and revocation of probation for additional drugs or property crimes. This isn’t about busting teens smoking some pot, it’s about hard drugs, Meth, and pills and the crime that comes with them.

    • Steve,
We can thank the deregulated banking industry and the destruction of our manufacturing base for the rise in crime, housing bubble, and income inequality that is plaguing the US. We come in dead last among developed nations for income equality. The drug, depression, crime, obesity, mental health, teenage pregnancies, and child health all suffer as equality becomes out of balance.

  4. There is a remarkable book every American should read, In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts, written by the leading authority of addiction, Dr. Gabor Mate.

From what I have seen traveling through indigenous cultures as well as what I currently see firsthand in our streets, addiction to drugs AND alcohol could be the downfall of out communities.

I can’t tell you how many villages I
passed by in Alaska where all that was left was a little cemetery. It’s residents? Destroyed by alcoholism.

  5. Reinette is on point when she posted… “addiction to drugs AND alcohol could be the downfall of our communities”.

Sadly it’s doing this here and now to our community. It’s really time for strong leadership and much public discussion and action on the comunity issue.

  6. With continued growth of income inequality as it’s institutionalization and strengthening in American life becomes accepted, alcoholism will rise and all hell will be released. A society composed of 99% Madam deFarge types becomes restless and very ugly.
