The NJUHSD teachers (notice I didn’t say ‘union’) have voted to endorse Jim Adams and Jim Drew for school board, according to my sources.
The teachers had a candidate forum last week, on Monday. Adams is an appointed incumbent. Drew is a challenger to Board President Katy Schwarz. Drew is a newly retired teacher and former union president.
This is a classic union versus GOP battle; and in a local, nonpartisan race.
Drew, a Republican, went to the local GOP and asked for an endorsement. He was denied because, as he was told, he is the former union president. Schwarz got the nod.
My source said the Board has agreed to do a formal proclamation endorsing Proposition 30 — an interesting stance since most (if not all) Board members are Republican (and some very staunch).
“Personally, I think Drew would be great,” one source said. “It would be good to have a, desperately needed, different perspective on our Board. At least it would spark dialogue.”

It is good to finally have some contested seats. Too often the school board seats in Nevada County are filled by appointments because no one bothers to run.
