This week the cover of The Union’s Sunday Express (meant to capture the community’s younger readers when I helped launch it some years ago) is featuring retiree Weldon Travis, who wrote “a collection of autobiographic vignettes during his time as a Marin County Sheriff.” For more information, go to http://www.residentdeputysheriff-travis.org, it reads.
What’s missing from the glowing profile is that readers questioned The Union’s judgment in running an inflammatory “open letter” to Barbara Boxer by Travis in August 2010. It generated 63 comments on Sierra Foothills Report.
Travis’ letter wasn’t satire; it was just plain angry, insulting and — some thought — threatening.
“Who in the hell do you think you are, Barbara Boxer? What flatulence has inflated your ego?” he wrote.
•”You were observed Infilgrante delicto with a fellow member of the Marin County Board of Supervisors, remember?”
•”We remain a nation founded under Christianity, not Sharia law, which denigrates womanhood and not, as Obama denies, one of murderous, intolerant, Muslim jihadists, sworn to annihilate us.”
•”You fail to recognize the wisdom of the past calamities of history — Nero’s delusions of grandeur, Mussolini’s Fascism, Hitler’s parallel philosophies, background and actions with Barry Sotero/Barack Hussein Obama. He is your president, not mine.”
And it concluded:
“You will be held to answer for your actions and affiliations. The days of reckoning draw nigh.
“Be forewarned: Many of us are stockpiling pre-1964 silver coins, non-perishable foodstuffs and ammunition to ward off the state and federal authorities and the mooching flatlanders who are unable, unwilling or too lazy to provide for themselves; we are planting “Victory Gardens,” and essentially preparing for the next, inevitable and overdue revolution.
“I perceive you as an enemy of our sovereign state. You and your ilk should take heed. Wake up, woman, and do your proper duty.”
As one reader put it: “This letter is over the top with violent and apocalyptic rhetoric and there are ‘threats’ against a Senator and local and state officials/police. All you have to do is take off your partisan glasses and it’s plan to see. The fact is that The Union has printed it, and the management is well aware of it by now.”
The background is here.
