College football game day

For years, I used to enjoy listening to football legend John Madden’s commentary on KCBS radio during my morning commute between San Anselmo and San Francisco. John would remark that this was his favorite time of year: when the football and baseball seasons converged. Now it’s here!

This is my nephew’s locker — “Jantz” — according to a new game-day post on the Iowa State Facebook page. Iowa State football is drawing record numbers, recording the nation’s fourth-largest jump in attendance. We’re going to watch the game on TV with Steele’s brother, Truk, and some smoked ham and gruyere sandwiches from the Bishop, Ca., Smokehouse and “wings” from Smiley Guys.

  1. How cool is that?

  2. I’m ready for the wings, cool this morning, football in the air-
Now if we could just get the owners to end the lock out of the real ref’s, I could watch the NFL without scabs making the calls-

    • Talks between the NFL and NFLRA (Officials union) broke off today (9/1) without an agreement with no further talks scheduled. The NFL has scheduled the replacement officials for all 16 games of week 1 of the regular season.

  3. Good win by ISU over Tulsa. Impressive start and good stats for Steele and his team.

  4. The players should respect and support the officials in their contract negotiations. Refuse to cross the picket line. Refuse to legitimize the use of scab officials. I was going to break my decade and half long boycott this year and start watching NFL games with my dad but no way in hell I will until the officials get their contract.

I have been boycotting on the premise of the corporatization of professional sports, which in turn prices out many of the true fans that can no longer afford to see live games. By 1997 my boycott included all professional sports. It is due to the players and coaches salaries, the over the top amenities on road trips, administrative salaries, extravagant stadium, cost of concessions, and the absolute greed that takes place on every single one of these levels. As a fan growing up I would go to a couple dozen games a year with my family or my friends. By the time I entered into my mid twenties only my corporate connected friends could afford or find tickets. Example- I had a girlfriend who worked in the business district in SF who was going with your fellow employees to sit on the floor at a Warrior game against Magic when Shaq was just making his mark as a player. She didn’t know one player name on the Warriors or any other player on the Magic other than Shaquille O’neal. I could tell you the entire Warrior roster and all of their stats and probably the same for the top 7 on the Magic. No tickets under $150 available but my girlfriend company bought tickets and wrote them off as a business expense and had seats on the floor. Where does that leave little Johnny whose dad is a truck driver and mom a teacher? It leaves him at home listening on the radio dreaming of being able to see and possibly meet one of his idols.
