Julia Morgan lived on Alameda Island and became a great architect.
She certainly deserves to be recognized locally for her work on the fabulous Northstar house.
Belle Douglas was a Nevada City woman who, among other things championed the cause of the Nisenan People, whose living descendants largely credit her for their survival.
I hope the AAUW is aware of her life and work.
She was quite an individual character.
Judith is spot on with her comment about Belle. Her work on behalf of our Nisenan alone was amazing but she also did many other things that benefited the citizens of Nevada City. In the 1930′s she headed the Nevada City Better Housing Committee that worked with a form of “Federal Stimulus” under the Housing Act to stimulute building activity. Many local houses and businesses were repaired, remodeled or built using during this time. Her work for the Nisenan and local housing are just two of the many things she did. She definitely deserves some recognition.
