How the GOP chases away members

Editor’s note: Demographers predict that the number of Latinos will surpass whites before the next presidential election in California. More than half the children in the state are Latino right now. “They don’t deserve it, but Democrats are going to scoop these voters up by default – all because you guys don’t want them,” according to a column in this morning’s Bee. The rest is here:

“I could be Republican, but I’m not and the GOP has itself to blame for that. I’m Catholic, fiscally conservative and save a little part of each day for prayer,” Marcos Breton begins.

“I own a gun. I believe in equal protection, keeping the government out of our private lives, and I take a dim view of flag burning and other desecrations of our national symbols.

“I’m all teed up for you Republican guys, but you don’t want me. Not really.

“Just check out the GOP convention. In words and deeds, the Grand Old Party seems to yearn for the 1950s – before the Civil Rights Act, ethnic diversity and uppity minorities.

“You use code words that fan the flames of a great myth – the one about President Barack Obama being born outside the United States.

“I’d respect Donald Trump and the “birthers” more if they simply verbalized their thought bubbles: “We’ve got to get that N-word out of the White House.”

“Even Mitt Romney, the GOP presidential nominee, made a birther joke recently. His surrogates now say he regrets it, and who can blame him?

“Outside of the cackles and knowing smirks Romney got from conservatives he is trying to attract to his base, a lot of us don’t think this birther stuff is very funny.

“It goes beyond disapproval of Obama’s views and policies and smacks of disapproval of Obama, the man with dark skin.

“It’s all too familiar to me.

  1. So if it weren’t for the fact that the GOP Platform is the ultimate in opening the floodgate of nutballery, he’d join them. Good to know he’s a moderate-

  2. It’s taken Breton this long to realize the Tea people and GOP’s main plank is a return to the ’50s, when TV, especially as depicted in Mayberry and whereever Lucy, Desi, Ethel & Fred lived, never dared go beyond racial inclusion than Desi, Lucy’s funny talking, overly tolerant, husband. There has been a mental divide separating these types from people of greatly less wealth–where the stoop for a four story, cold water flat, is the front porch and a cook-out is done at a local park if you can get a grill.
I watched Chris Mathews–rather outraged–call out the RNC on a round table, telling Priebus that Romney’s birther joke (B.S.) was totally a rascist jab at Obama, and Priebus denied it all, holding fast to the joke “party line.” BTW, 1st time I’ve seen Priebus; exactly the type who wouldn’t understand.

“Army soldiers formed a militia group in Georgia that plotted to overthrow the U.S. government — and they killed a fellow soldier and his girlfriend to keep the plot secret, prosecutors alleged Monday, according to the Associated Press.
Prosecutors in the Long County, Ga., case say that the militia group planned to overtake the nearby Fort Stewart, to bomb a dam in Washington state and poison the state’s apple crop and ultimately overthrow the government and assassinate the president, according to reports.”

  3. And in Lubbock, Tx, if you missed this story, a Co.Commish or some other local honcho, with sherrif’s support, was woofing at Obama, about a local uprising and gunfire in the streets, If Obama uses U.N. troops and marches into Lubbock for his (Obama’s) nefarious, anti-American purposes. Guranteed this dude with his Ostrich cowboy boots on, doesn’t know the difference between the Preamble to the Constitution Emancipation Proclamation

  4. I’m surprised that the white bedsheet sales in the area around the republican convention aren’t going thru the roof, but with all the rain we’d know who they are anyhow…….

  5. This is a special brand of full blown Infowars crazy. The whole GOP party has nutted up in my opinion. It’s kinda sad to see. It’s kinda like a group of guys in a tavern talking war stories without having never been to one. Everybody knows they’re lying but are too mannered to say anything. But they are lying. I’m concerned about the southern coast and the boots on the ground that are doing something about it. No more Katrinas. Ever. Again.

  6. As income inequality gap widens the current extremist republican party numbers will decrease but their party will become more concentrated and scary. Fear is what drives the republican party. Whether it be in the party platform or the smokey back rooms where the leadership makes the decisions of the party, fear is the driving factor. Especially when it comes to the fear of what most Americans want.

Republicans fear that democracy (people power) might take place and we are seeing an absolute assault on voting in 2012. Using fear the republican party tells us everything that will be taken away but rarely what they will bring us in tangible gains. The claim less government and more corporate control is the answer. Somehow this will bring us liberty and freedom. That recipe has never brought anything except feudalism, fascism, and tyranny. So the question becomes when republican leadership and those who run under that flag speaks of freedom and liberty who are they representing at that moment? I believe they truly are speaking of liberty and freedom but for the wealthy and powerful only not the rest of the people.

There is an answer that neither party in power will address because it will ultimately diminish their party’s power. That is making laws that take special interest money out of politics. The democrats are taking a gamble of regaining power out of a default position. The republicans become so extreme that people will vote for the democratic party by default, this scenario is playing itself before our eyes and the people are the ones who are suffering. Right now the Democratic and Republican Party coffers are overflowing with money but at the same time have record low approval ratings that are in the teens for both parties from the governed.

    How Can This Be?

I have shared this before and will continue to share it until people realize they are being marketed to fear the other. It is the opening paragraph of a letter to the citizens of the former CA 4th.

“Nothing in our Constitution addresses political parties or partisanship. However, over the past 30 years, political parties have presented partisanship as the only operating paradigm. Our government has become less representative because that’s what BOTH parties want. They fight for campaign dollars instead of votes, then use those dollars to manipulate opinion in an effort to frighten voters to take their side. This was not what the founders envisioned for our grand republic.”

  7. As long as people can think there will be disagreement and thus, eventually, different ideas for solutions, creations, modes of gov’t. etc., and political parties . ( got to skype)
