Update: Nevada Union High grad Steele Jantz was named the starter! Good going!

Iowa State Coach Paul Rhoads will meet with the media around 12:30 p.m. CST Tuesday (or 10:30 a.m. here) to discuss “a two-deep issue.” Good luck Steele (my nephew)! We’re rooting for you!

  1. Didn’t Steele have a pretty solid season last year? I would think it was his position to lose in the preseason.

  2. Ben,
Steele had a foot injury that took him out of the starting lineup for a while and hurt his play, creating a QB competition. He’s healthy now, though. Looking forward to tomorrow’s announcement! Other than that, my lips are sealed (for a change). LOL!

  3. Good Luck Steele, injuries are a funny thing. Look at potentially the best quarterback in NFL history and his injury with 2 minutes left in the NFC championship game with the lead. He missed the next season due to his injury and came back following year as second string. Of course I am talking about Joe Montana, as good as Steve Young was it still rubs me the wrong way how the niner’s handled the situation.

  4. Correction, I went and watched the video and it was in the 4th quarter with just under 10 minutes the niners had the lead when Montana went down. It was around the 2 minute mark with the Craig fumble. I haven’t thought about that game in at least a decade. I am a Raider fan in a household of Niner fans but by my 20′s I learned to let the rivalry go unless it was head to head.

  5. Steele was named the starter today!

    • Congratulations Steele and family. I am looking forward to the college football season. I am going to try to get down to some games with my dad this year.

  6. Here’s an ESPN report:

Senior Steele Jantz will start Iowa State’s season opener against Tulsa, the university announced on Tuesday.

Jantz beat out sophomore Jared Barnett to win the starting job that both players shared last season.

“Steele has demonstrated the skill set that I think is ideal for our offense,” coach Paul Rhoads said in a statement. “The main point is that we have depth at the quarterback position with two men who led us to a second bowl game appearance in three years.”

  7. Congrats!

    • As a lifetime Iowa Hawkeye fan who covered games in Iowa City for a Chicago newspaper during college, I wish Steele the best , except against the University of Iowa. It’s been fun telling my Iowa friends that Iowa State’s starting QB is from our little town, even if the roster says Agoura Hills. And I hope he’ll school the Big 12, the major conference I despise the most. I’d love to see Iowa State in a major bowl game, with Texas and Oklahoma in the Toilet Bowl…

  8. Good & Happy News:) Congrats And Yay!
