Russ: Please post this upcoming meeting on the official broadband website too!

I do not see this press release posted on the taxpayer-funded Gold Country Consortium website yet, but here it is from my “in” box. I’m going to go to this meeting, just to make sure our tax dollars are being spent wisely:

Forwarding faster rural Internet: Nevada County stakeholder group to host 5 county regional Broadband meet

“CONNECTING WITH THE INTERNET THROUGH CONNECTING WITH OUR COMMUNITY!”

Continuing the goal of providing better, faster Internet service to Nevada County and our region, the Gold Country Broadband Consortium is hosting its next quarterly regional community meeting in Nevada County in September.

Event location: NU Cafeteria/Community Conference Center, Nevada Union High School, 11761 Ridge Road Grass Valley, CA. (watch for the signs!)
Event date/time: Saturday, September 22, 2012 1-4 pm

The event will include:
- a brief background on this California Public Utility-funded grant program, the Consortium’s mission under the grant, the Sierra Economic
Development Corporation’s (SEDcorp) role as the grant program facilitator; and an update from the Consortium’s local advisory group*
– a panel presentation, including Q/A opportunities, on personal, business, education, and community benefits and challenges of Internet service for
rural areas featuring Nevada County business owners, and public and community members;
- an opportunity for community members to help the consortium identify specific community needs and meet with Internet providers to explore
options for service – vendors will be there!

Our site host, the Nevada Union High School Community Center, features high speed internet with 1 gigabyte upload and download capability. Our guests can use onsite Wi-Fi and cable hook-ups for laptop computers. Come see how Internet is supposed to work!

Community feedback regarding existing service (or lack thereof) is a key goal of the Consortium’s mission and your participation is important. This is your opportunity to help yourself, your neighborhood, local businesses and our community.

Connect with us so that we may connect with you!

The Gold Country Broadband Consortium (representing Nevada, Placer, El Dorado, Sierra and Alpine Counties) may be funded for up to three years by the California Public Utilities Commission to further the mission of providing and collecting information necessary to identify opportunities and constraints related to providing faster Internet service (Broadband) to un-served and under-served areas of Nevada County and our five county region.

*the local broadband advisory group is made up of representatives including County and City elected officials, local high school and community college representatives, economic development non-profits, internet service providers, internet-related businesses and community members

Excuse me? Where? Community Center? LOL!!

“features high speed internet with 1 gigabyte upload and download capability. Our guests can use onsite Wi-Fi and cable hook-ups for laptop computers. Come see how Internet is supposed to work!”

What?!? Where?!? At NU?!? The Wi-Fi at NU is so bad that I get kicked off 3,4 …10 times a day! I have to reboot….restart several times a day just to take attendance.

This is perfect. I ‘double dog dare’ anyone to go up and hook up to NU’s wireless.
