Goddamn!
It’s funny how things change over the years. Currently many critics and psychologists have deemed Holden Caufield, at best, a borderline sociopath. I’d post some of the citations but there are too many. But if you’re interested just google “Holden Caulfield sociopath” or “analysis”.
I didn’t read “Catcher” until in my fifties when I was a teacher and had a totally different take on Holden than the other, 15 year younger male teacher who shared the same room with me and the 23 y.o. male, teacher’s aide. If I remember correctly, and I’m not sure I do, I saw Holden as a spoiled, ineffectual, dude. Even in High School I’d much rather read Eric Ambler, Arthur Koestler, The Long Walk; books my parents were reading, not what was assigned at school–when possible.
Different Worlds!!!!
But from the viewpoint of collectible modern First Editions, it’s still up in the top 100.
