I love the different approaches folks come up with for converting vans or micro-RVs…you see some fairly ingenious stuff. It’s a bummer you can’t get VW Eurovans/Transporters in the US anymore — the last year was 2003; after that, they opted to use a rebadged Chrysler minivan (the “Routan”) instead of their own Eurovan, an ignominious decision for a company that practically invented the family camper van.
So, the cool Doubleback shown in this ad isn’t available on US shores…a shame. It’s ironic that VW named the US version of this van the “Eurovan”, while the version for sale in Europe (at least the conversion version) is called the “California.” Grass is always greener, I guess!
Seeing this video reminds me of the 1990 VW MultiVan I used to own. For day to day driving it was a comfortable seven passenger van. Not the fastest off the line but more than capable. On weekends, we used it for camping. It was not the full-on Westfalia camper. It was the same as the camper minus the sink, stove and refrigerator and with the pop-up roof with the sleeping area above. I still remember a trip to L.A. from the Bay Area with five other guys and myself cruising down Hwy. 5. A portable TV plugged into the electrical outlet watching (them, not me) the NFL playoff games and an ice chest full of adult beverages. Me? Since it was my van I was the designated driver who drove them merrily down the freeway. It was great for road trips like that. Ahhhh…I still miss that bus.
Too bad this van in the video isn’t sold here in the U.S…yet. I think it would sell quite well.

Sid, thanks for your usage of “ignominious.” I love that word, and don’t see it used much. Yet another reason why the blogs are so much fun.
Sid,
Well said! Just get one for Grenoble and crank the heat in winter!
