Del Mar’s “Miss Cougar” contest stirs debate on Facebook — sign of the times

Back in 1941, Bing Crosby recorded “Where the Surf meets the Turf” to promote the famed Del Mar Race Track that he opened with his Hollywood friends.

Now, for the second year in a row, the Racetrack north of San Diego is holding the “Miss Cougar” Del Mar contest to promote the racing season. Del Mar states the contest is named after a famous racehorse, Cougar II, and the Cougar II Handicap.

But it also is stirring some heated debate on Facebook.

“It’s the call of the wild: Del Mar’s annual crowning of Miss Cougar 2012.

“Del Mar Racing is looking for submission to the pageant of sorts, which will honor the women for whom age is nothing but a number,” as NBCSanDiego.com is reporting.

‘”Being a Cougar is more than just a desire to date a younger man, it’s a state of mind,’ said one of the entries. ‘I’ve finally come into my own and enjoy life to the fullest every day.’

“This year, all the submissions will be taken on Facebook. The contest will end on July 27 when Miss Cougar 2012 is crowned.” The contest is here.

Del Mar’s Facebook page is lit up with some dissent, however.

“When did Del Mar turn into that stink hole Hollywood Park?” one reader said.

“Wow Del Mar. How low class can you get?” said another.

“Wow, chill out people. It’s just a little fun event,” said one. “You remember fun, right? Geez.”
