The fundraising for an ice skating rink in downtown Grass Valley is underway.
Downtown Ice Skating Rink
December 7, 2012 – January 1, 2013
The first of its kind in downtown Grass Valley or Nevada County! We are looking for sponsors to help us operate the family-friendly ice skating rink from Dec. 7 -January 1. The rink will be open daily, weekdays after 4 p.m. and weekends starting at 11 a.m. To make this happen we need a total of $40,000 to rent the ice rink.
Here’s a rendering of the rink (click for larger image):

Here’s to a White Christmas!
the floating umbrellas are amazing… will they be charging to skate… so much an hour… to help off set the cost?
There is a proposal for $10 admission and then a skate rental fee. Children will be FREE with adults. More to come on this
We have different activities and skate times, sessions and shows planned. As we get closer to our goal we will give you all the exciting details!
Ha, you can’t buy an experience on line or find it in the parking lot at Walmart!
What exactly does that mean Steve??? What a curious response…..
Local, not internet or down the hill….
I am sorry I was obtuse. My “Ha” was meant very positively, as in laughing with, not at.
What I mean is that what you are creating in Grass Valley for December is an experience, in the sense that it satisfies several cognitive needs at the same time–our sense of place in an historic downtown, spending time with your family and neighbors, engaging in a physical activity, and developing a personal, service based relationship with your merchant.
You can’t do that on-line, and you can’t create it with a designed “village center”. Sense of place and belonging comes from a place emerging organically in the pubic realm, over time, like Downtown Grass Valley has. And you could put a skating rink in the parking lot of a Walmart, but you would not really know anybody, or feel like you are part of an authentic community.
I think what you are doing in GV is brilliant. It is the perfect way to enhance your competitive advantage. My guess is it increases sales and customer loyalty tremendously.
Now THIS is an “out of the box” idea! great job Julia and best of luck.
I’d have a couple of wheel chair like devices such that the older folks could be skated around the rink by the younger folks. If they build it, I will come.
Where is it going to be located?
Being the engineer, I’m interested in how this area will be set up?
If it’s going into a parking lot, how will that surface be protected and not turned into a cobble pebble parking lot in a year?
It’s a great idea, and it would add another fun element to the December get together’s.
Kudo’s to coming up with something new and fun for the area!
