Not too early to project Beason, Anderson as winners

Nate Beason and Tom Anderson are way ahead of their respective tea party-endorsed candidates, Sue McGuire and George Smyrnos, according to the latest returns.

It’s not too early to declare “purple” the winner, and it’s not too early to declare both of them the winners in their respective races, district 1 supervisor and judge. Beason – a moderate GOPer – is likely to wind up winning without a runoff in November.

Having said that, Smyrnos is doing a bit better than I expected. (Earlier returns are more conservative, though). Anderson is a Democrat, while Smyrnos is supported by staunch conservatives and critics of how the family court has been managed – a mixed constituency.

Democrat Jim Reed is doing very well in the county in the Congressional race, against Sam Aanestad and Doug LaMalfa. Tom McClintock’s opponent is doing surprisingly well.

This primary is shaping up to be a referendum against the tea party and hard right – and The Union’s out-of-touch editorialism. The hard-right bloggers – Steele, Rebane, Pruett and Juvinall – are deeply out of touch with the community. Mark Meckler couldn’t get elected here.

The best real-time reporting is Yubanet, ahead of The Union and the county website. The Union’s Election Day poll is proving irresponsible and bogus.

In Placer County, Democrat Jennifer Montgomery is way ahead of her opponent, Jerry Johnson. Placer also is “purple.”

The Union newspaper online poll: An Election Day farce?

Update: First results in, confirming the irrelevancy of The Union poll. http://yubanet.com/regional/June-2012.php

While the community is out voting, The Union is running a poll on its “Town Talk Live!” feature.

As of 5:30 p.m. the poll showed Les Baugh leading Ted Gaines by 76 percent to 21 percent; George Smyrnos leading Tom Anderson by 71 to 29; Sue McGuire ahead of Nate Beason by 74 percent to 18 percent and Al Bulf with 9 percent; and Ed Scofield leading Jedidiah Biagi by 61 percent to 39 percent.

“Hey Union, How many people have voted today in the online poll? one reader asked. “Sorry guests; only shows percentage,” The Union moderator responded.

Running a poll while the real polls are open on Election Day shows poor judgment, and it will be interesting to compare The Union’s poll results with the actual returns.

Judging by the early returns, it may prove yet again that The Union is “The Tea Party Gazette.”
