Sue McGuire’s great-grandmother moved to Grass Valley from Virginia City, Nevada, back in 1886, according to her campaign website. Sue, her parents and her grandparents are all lifelong residents of Nevada County.
And to their credit, Sue’s grandparents had an organic farm on Banner Mountain and were awarded a State of California medal for agricultural excellence.
But as it turns out, an agent/contractor for Sue’s campaign shopped at Costco in Roseville for her big campaign fundraiser at the Stonehouse in Nevada City, according to campaign documents. Come on people! Think local!
Some $332 in food for the fundraiser came from “Costco Wholesale; 6750 Stanford Ranch Rd., Roseville” and is listed as a payment made by an “agent or independent contractor (on behalf of this committee),” according to the latest 460 campaign documents.
To be sure, Costco has some real bargains — the sign of a frugal politican. But a “Nevada County grown” political campaign should think twice about getting its food “off the hill” for a fundraiser. A link to Nevada County Grown is here.
Other payments made by the agent or independent contractor:
•$1,007 for political lawn signs to Cross & Oberlie of Neenah, Wi.
•$1190 in “amount/fair market value” to The Union newspaper for a full-page political ad. (Sierra Foothills Construction contributed the ad, according to the filing.).
•$490 to 200 Printing in Commerce, Ca., for postcards.
McGuire’s campaign showed expenditures of $17,478.98 for the calendar year and contributions of $15,004.10. It shows an ending cash balance of $2737 and outstanding debt of $3622.
Her campaign contributors this period included Robert Ingram, JoAnn Rebane (the spouse of blogger George Rebane), and Kimberly Janousek (of B&C Hardware), among others.
