  1. It’s nice to have a little honesty and straight-talk. Looking forward to hearing the whining from the top earners… that’s just classic.

Just heard this morning that some talk show guest’s response to the question “what do you think of gay marriage” was “why the F… are you wasting my time with that F…ing stupid question? Why do I care who marries who, and why is it a government question? What kind of F…ing idiots even care about that question?” Now, if a presidential candidate said THAT, he’d have my vote – and a WHOLE lot of others – in a heartbeat! I hope Obama discovers the actual payback of growing a backbone and standing up for gay marriage. Now it would be nice if he grew the same backbone regarding oil subsidies, money in politics, the transgressions of big ag, big car, big bank, etc etc etc. Not holding breath.

  2. California Has Financial Problems–and NO wonder? Anybody up for counting these?

These are all California State Agencies: Do we need everyone of these? I don’t think so!

But of course, the only places they can cut costs are . . . Education, Police and Fire according to both state and federal politicians.
Whether you’re a Democrat, a Republican or Independent, this list has to shock you. Over the years, these very same politicians have created this enormous pork barrel of agencies that employ about as many people as the total population of the State of Alaska. All of these people get salaries, medical coverage and pensions at the expense of California citizens.

  3. Quite a list, indeed. Tom, did you accumulate this list or is a citation needed? Now a little homework. Under each of these, perhaps a little summary of what they do. Why it was created? What would happen if the agency was lost; just to start.

  4. **Just because some entity says “California” in its heading or title does not mean California taxes are paying for them. Many of these funding mechanisms, i.e., CSU & UC systems are funded with private contributions (charitable, tax deductible dollars) and/or matching federal dollars and foundation grants (often big businesses, local businesses and corporations). So, Chris, the list is only about a quarter of the story. And because of these factors Governor Brown wields the red pen over what he’s cutting: mostly in public safety, schools and social services.

  5. Lots of agencies, indeed. But without heeding Chris’ and Kate’s advice, suggestions, not a solution to budget problems. Need more itemized info, such as budgets for each of the above cited particulars. Particularly important, as Chris points out, is “why it was created/”

The money is in the bank, so to speak. The problem is when so many do every thing possible to avoid paying a fair share, or act irresposibly with other people’s money, calling for less regulation. Once again, weak regulations–less government–has led to the loss of 2 billion of other people’s money. But let’s get rid of that regulatory agency. That’ll solve the problem, RIGHT? And that guy from Facebook; built his fortune in USA, the renounces his citizenship in favor of becoming a citizen of Singapore. Symbolic of the mindset. I say, don’t let the MFer back into this country. Check out Jordon Belfort’s story, and the follow-up Catching the Wolf of Wall Street. When we rein in these slime balls who so many tout as the ‘best and the brightest’, and whose complicated manipulations of markets and derivitives caused the meltdown in ’08, from which Obama and team prevented the USA from falling into the abyss, budget problems can be solved. And when the forces of fanatical dogmatism proclaiming non-compromise a virtue becomes the credo of one party–proudly and aggressively asserted by the guy who just beat the very conservative Senator Luger in the Indiana Republican Primary–gain the upper hand in governance, then, as for problems, you ain’t seen nothing yet.
    Nostradamus aka Ed

  6. So…..who are we keeping and who’s taking gas? I’m for kind of keeping the CSU and UC system around. Color me funny that way. I’m sure there are agencies that could be combined or eliminated. We could start with the veterans. That would be popular.

The point is, more data about each agency is needed before a blanket statement can be attached to each. How many employees? How is it actually funded? I agree with Jeff P., too many oversimplifications.

    • Chris, starting with the veterans–although I know you didn’t mean it–isn’t as outlandish as one might think. Now, this statement I read somewhere, months ago, and I can’t source it or prove it. That said, it still sticks in my mind, if I understood it correctly and it was fairly clear cut. Jon Huntsman had a proposal when pondering or an announced candidate for Pres., to the effect of lowering the tax rate for the richest group ( 10%, 1%, I don’t remember) to 25% or 15 % and concomittantly, to make up for the reduced revenue, among other things, begin taxing the disability and compensation payments of service connected armed forces disabled–such as myself. Even if I wasn’t affected, this, if true, is believable, considering the mindset of the right wing and is particularly repulsive considering the Damage Bush and his coop of chickenhawks inflicted on so many with the backdoor draft and multi-tours of duty. And now these poor souls with PTSD will begin their struggle with a totally adversarial VA. Not just my opinion–a very fine book has been written on this subject, and as my struggles with the VA continue, I spoke with a McClintock staff member recently who responded to my question submitted on an email from their office. It was clear, their office would make a couple of calls to the VA, accept their CYA explanation and drop it. But, if I write another book, it will be The Veteran is Always Wrong. (Perhaps I repeat myself.)

  7. Here’s an idea. why don’t we quadruple the cost for out of state/country students and cut in half for in-state.

  8. There a few other revenue raising options common in many east coast and mid west states, one in particular, simply a reminder of our Colonial and early years of independency.

Freeways are rare; instead, turnpikes and more rustic, scenic parkways dominate the auto and truck transportation network. And like in olden days, every set amout of miles, a toll is paid. Just like driving into S.F. Once one crosses the Mississippi River, I can’t remember paying tolls, except maybe in Oklahoma driving to Texas. And Dallas does have toll roads, too. It’s been years since I drove across country, so maybe it has changed a bit, but I haven’t noticed much change I CA since my arrival in 1986.

And the beaches and Pacific waves, therein lies a swell profit center. In the much of the Northeast, beaches are privitized, either by wealthy, gated compounds, or the towns themselves. One must show proof of living in the town to buy a season pass allowing entry to however many beaches under contol of that town. Some towns, such as Greewich, CT even have island beaches, accessed by ferry. And even at Todd’s Point, a gorgeous promontory, with ruins of an old estate, beautiful beach, walking and jogging trails through wetlands rife with shore birds, teeny and tall, and an abundance of areas for day time BBQs, on a long run, I had to carry my beach card to gain entrance.

Let’s put an end to surfers, waders, swimmers, sunbathers–even though they wear so much clothing these days–and those darn sand artistes, altering the sandscape with those castles, statues, and sundry visions culled from their senses into ephemeral objects of wonderment and beauty–not paying their share. Skiiers have to pay to use the snow; but they haven’t started charging the ice sculpters.

And, the holiest of the holy. Property taxes. I sure like the low rate I pay here, especially with the $100,000 assessment reduction as a 100% disabled Vet–with the value dropping by about 60% since I bought w/o a mortgage in 2005, my tax is now about $1,400–but if I magically transported my property back to the Town of Rye, Port Chester, N.Y., or Greenwich, CT–the taxes could easily top $15,000, depending on location, and probably not be lower than 6 to 7,000 anywhere. A little bump up could ease the strain, and I’m definitely on a limited income.

Hell, I’ll even send back my CA ST. tax refund from last year, if only everyone worked together for solutions. Still gung ho; working togrther. And a curse upon dogmatic demagogues pledging no compromise on issues nearly as fundamentally flawed as the insistence the the Southern Aristocracy was entitled to own people where they lived and in any new state added to the Union, the real heart of the conflict between the North and the South.
